I have purchased a H2C with the 10w laser, 2 x AMS 2 Pros and an AMS HT. The AMS HT is connected to the left extruder and the 2 AMS 2 pro’s are connected to the right extruder system.
Do I need an external power supply to run the AMS 2 pro’s so that I can use the heating (de-humidifier) mode and print from it at the same time?
I have watched a U-tube video saying that you can run the AMS 2 pro in heat mode while printing. This is because the H2 series has sufficient power supply to do so. However I’m running 2 AMS 2 pro’s.
You only need one power supply for 2, AMS 2 Pros. The one connected directly to the H2C receives enough power to dry filament, thru the 6 pin connector. The daisy chained one (and any others), need the power supply to use the drying feature.
The H2C doesn’t have the “dry in active AMS while printing” feature, yet anyway. H2D added that in last firmware update, so presumably H2C will be next (or they’ll pull that feature on H2D also).
You can dry in a non-active AMS while printing (the AMS isn’t being used for current print at all, including as a auto-refill source). However to get full drying temperature this way (while printing), the drying AMS 2 needs to have a power adapter – the printer can’t provide enough power for drying and printing at the same time. The drying mode will engage, but the maximum temperature will be severely limited (to < 30°C IIRC). (The AMS HT already has external power of course, so the limit doesn’t apply.)
This is covered at the very bottom of the AMS 2 Pro product page (though the first sentence is no longer correct for all printers):
Can I dry filament while printing?
Currently, drying is not supported for AMS 2 Pro/HT that are actively involved in the printing process, including those that may be used for automatic refill during the current print job. Printing while drying is not yet supported.
The only “dry while print” scenario currently supported is: the printer uses some of the connected AMS 2 Pro/HT units or an external spool holder for printing, while the AMS 2 Pro/HT units not involved in the current print job can be used for drying.
If the printer is feeding or printing, and at the same time powering 1 AMS 2 pro for drying, the drying power will be automatically reduced, in order to ensure that the printing power is prioritized. So it is recommend to use the external power adapter for best drying results.
