Using Support Filament with ABS?

I think I may have misunderstood the purpose of a support filament, specifically when using ABS. I am trying to use some Generic HIPS as the support filament when printing with ABS, but the HIPS does not come away cleanly. It’s mostly merged with the ABS base.

I understand that one way of removing HIPS is to dissolve it using “Limonene”, but I was hoping that this was an option, rather than the single route to removal.

Can HIPS only be removed cleanly by dissolving in Limonene, or can you also just remove it using the standard approach of breaking off the support filament?

I see that Bambulabs own “support filament” seems to be able to print at temperatures similar to that of ABS and am wondering if I should just try to use that instead.

For clean removal of HIPS, are there any guidelines as to the best slicer/filament settings to use?

Limonene is just a terpene that is commonly found in lemons. I have only used my support filament once, but it breaks off very easily, so I never needed to try and dissolve it.

You could just buy a lemon or lemon juice and apply it to see if it would dissolve the material.
