View menu hotkeys/shortcuts don't work

For me the View menu ortho view shortcuts – ctrl-0, ctrl-1, ctrl-2 etc. – rarely work. Occasionally they do, but usually they do nothing.

Just me or do others also see this?

Thanks.

For clarity, what version of Studio are you using?

The “focus” must be in the 3D viewer part of the application for the shortcuts to work. Meaning one needs to click at least once on that part. If the last thing used was the object tree/settings sidebar, the shortcuts won’t work.

I have a fix for that already which I’ll be submitting, hopefully that gets accepted. It’s especially useful when the shortcuts are being triggered by an external macro launcher, like buttons on a 3D mouse or macro keyboard or what-have-you. They don’t work if focus isn’t correct. I already have another change submitted for adding a “fit in view” shortcut that works that way… pending acceptance.

I’m in 2.5.0.66 Windows (la la la 25 characters)

I agree that ‘works only if view pane has focus’ is expected behavior, but I see the hotkeys not working 95% of the time when view pane is focused. I.e. I click in the view pane, drag to rotate the view, and immediately afterward, with no intervening action, the hotkeys fail.

Once in a while they do work and if I could figure out what causes that I’d do it all the time as a workaround. (When this happens they work only once, using them in sequence to see different views never works.)

Hmm, I haven’t noticed that, but TBH I haven’t used those a lot either (a lot of times the view ends up in a funky spot anyway). I’ll try it on the release version and see if I can recreate that. But if you can find some more specific reproduction case, that would be very helpful. It’s possible it’s still a focus issue and my fix already, err… fixes that.

My steps to reproduce this bug are:

  1. open an empty Studio, i.e. without a project
  2. click Prepare
  3. click the viewer pane
  4. ctrl-1

Expected result is switch to top view, actual result is nothing happens.

I’m very sure that what I see is not a focus issue. I’ve tried a thousand times explicitly giving the view pane focus by clicking on it, and it does not have any effect in making the view hotkeys work.

I’m a very keyboardy user and it is really painful having these not working.

Ctrl-0 through Ctrl-7 and all the other hotkeys are working here.

Windows 11, Studio beta version 2.5.1.52
No mention of a bug fix in the release notes, no recent related issues found on GitHub.

Are you using any other hotkey utilities?

No, there’s nothing on my machine that would affect this.

Yeah no “joy” here either (so to speak), can’t recreate with any version (2.4, 2.5.0.66, last beta, self-built from latest published code). Totally not doubting you (I’ve seen much weirder things), there just “must” be some other factor involved. I’ll try it on a 3rd PC as soon as I can find where the keyboard wandered off to… lol.

With the focus thing, I was/am wondering if something else is stealing the focus somehow… IDK how or what, but would “explain” it in a logical way. Of course might not be that at all, as you say.

Or something else “stealing” the hotkey, as Iraus suggests, that would also explain it. Windows has some “hooks” to allow even backgrounded apps to “steal” keystrokes in some cases.

Which Windows BTW, 11? And no other “special” peripherals like 3D mouse or macro board or something?

Try the other Ctrl key? Do you have another keyboard (or computer) to rule out defective hardware?

Ctrl-everything works in every other app.

Well whatever just me. :cloud_with_rain:
