I’ve gotten this once or twice, make sure the build plate is clean, there are no plastic bits trapped between the bottom of the build plate and the heat bed, (wipe them both clean with a lint-free cloth), and the build plate is properly seated.
If you still have problems, clean the nozzle, (also if X1C clean the Lidar lens), try swapping the hot-end (order spare silicone socks if you order spare hot-ends).
Don’t try manually leveling the bed, you’ll only change things chasing what’s probably a different problem.
detected failure, it will throw an error message, and complain to you. 99% of scenarios fall here, bambu firmware really likes its sensor data and does not go happily without it
undetected failure, it will successfully calibrate badly.
2a) it will set z offset bad, and either fly far above the bed spilling loose spaghetti everywhere, or will dig down too far and destroy your bed.
2b) if it gets far enough and creates a bed mesh of bad data, this is what that often looks like. Those are “raised” areas that [faulty] bed mesh sensor said was ++++height. This is unlikely to happen on bambu a1 since it taps to level and the sensor is in the toolhead, it will fail earlier
But I’m still a Newbie with less than 1000 hours. (Ah-Ha! 847 hours so far. I found it! I’ve been printing some equipment racks and totaled up some hours.)
