What is the purpose of this?

I am new to 3D printing and have a question, what is the purpose for this extra object when printing multiple colors?

(I would have searched the archives if I knew what it is called.)

It’s the wipe tower.

It’s there to allow purging the remaining filament of one color when switching to another color.

Purging and pressure as well I believe? To my understanding it allows the pressure to build up in the nozzle so that when it goes back to the model it doesn’t doesn’t have a pressure difference at the beginning of the layer

Why do these towers print?

It is a prime tower. It helps to maintain a clean and colour-pure model. You can enable or disable it, change the location, and change the size. When you have colour changes in a single layer, it is far more useful. Your model only changes colour at each layer, by the looks of it, you could disable it and your model will look just as good.
