Why can't we send directly to printers?

Presumably they use the data to improve the AI spaghetti detection. The larger the dataset, the better it learns. Eventually, maybe it would be good enough to predict a likely spaghetti event in advance, based on your print settings? That would be cool.

Even with no internet, as long as your printer is connected to your router by wifi, you can SEND to the printer SD card using the slicer - and access the SD card from the slicer to print files.

Another outage today. Thanks BambuLabs for this nonsense “feature”. I hate it. I can’t go on with my project!

To print from the SD Card, you can also send the print file from Bambu Studio via Wi-Fi. In this case, the file goes through your local network (LAN) and not through the cloud.

You can follow these steps to do it, which are part of the Wiki article

Print from SD Card with Wi-Fi Transfer

1. Slice the 3D Model using Bambu Studio

On your computer, open Bambu Studio and import the model you wish to print, then follow these steps:

  • Select the correct Printer Type
  • Select the correct Plate Type
  • Select the type of filament you wish to print with
  • Click on Slice Plate

2. Send the model to the printer Micro SD card

Once the file has been sliced, the model preview will be shown.

  • Select the small arrow next to the Print Plate
  • Click on the Send option
  • Click Send again

Select the printer you want to send to in the pop-up window and click Send.

As one who has been compromised multiple times - by others who were supposed to keep my data safe - I have come to hate all things cloud. I’ve seen IT from the inside at a few organizations and while for the most part it was good, some practices would scare the heck out of people. It’s all in management’s hands. If they want to cut corners, IT is seen as a tick, sucking the blood out of a company for no real reward or benefit.

Here’s a benefit - users not upset about cloud service interruptions, users whose data isn’t compromised, etc. When data security and uptime are in other peoples’ hands, you never know what you’ll get until something happens to pull away the veil.

Regarding the cloud-based stuff, it’s nothing else but trusting your data to someone else’s computer, hoping (s)he has taken all the necessary security steps to protect your data/business… Fact is, no cloud provider or operator are ever secure or trustworthy. I rather store my data on prem than trust a third party with it. Exemplifying with the screenshot below.

For some reason my printer was logged out from the bambu server and BB Studio would not recognise it.
I expect if I had time to think about it , I could have tried setting LAN only mode to see if I could then connect to the printer.

Same. Saw Autocad trying to force me into a cloud - nope thanks. People think that cloud is always better for everything. They are forcing a cloud without any logical reason.

Tried that just now. It appears from this snapshot that it still goes through the cloud to get there:

Not sure what error code 0 is, but my guess is it defaults to sending through the cloud if I haven’t done some other kind of configuration to bypass the cloud. I guess my point is that there must be more to it than just having my printer connected by wifi and sending the file from the slicer. Or did I miss something?

Update:
Well I’ll be damned. I tried it again just now, and this time it went over the LAN:


I made no changes. I just literally tried it a second time. It seems I can’t know which it will do until after it has done it.

Update2:
The file never does arrive. It just hangs in this mode. Looking up Error code 0 using Chatgpt, I find:

In Orca Slicer, error code 0 generally indicates a communication issue between the slicer and the printer, rather than a specific problem with the G-code file itself. This could be due to network connectivity issues, incorrect IP address or settings, or problems with the printer’s Wi-Fi connection. Ensure that your X1C printer is properly connected to the network and that the correct settings are configured in Orca Slicer for sending files. You may also try restarting both the printer and slicer to resolve the issue.

which is weird because I have no problem printing through the cloud, as per usual, but even just sending the file through the cloud seems to fail. I checked the bambu cloud status on the web, and it says its working fine.

Oh well, maybe this will get fixed in some future release.

Just to be clear you are using “Send” (which on an X series you need a SD card installed) not "“Print Plate”?

But everyone knew this BEFORE ever purchasing their printers. They never concealed this from anyone. That’s like buying a Tesla and then whining about not being able to run it on gasoline.
