Why does the search function in Makerworld not work?

I had quite often the situation that I have a special need, for example an adapter from 75mm to 35mm. If I try to search for such an adapter in maker world, i got a lot of models, but not even one model meets the requirement “75mm to 35mm” . If i use google, the first hint leads to a model with the correct size in Makerwold. Why is Makerworld not able to find this model ? I tried again and again with different prompts and never got the correct result.

If I search for 75mm to 35mm I get the expected models (shown above).

It will find anything with a title, tag or content within the description for 75mm, to, and 35mm.

If you think it will find models with a dimension between of 35mm to 75mm, that will not happen.

The search looks for the text in your search and matches that to the content of the model information.

You have not shared the model link (URL) that you refer to, if you do, we can determine what a suitable search would be.

hallo helga…

die chancen etwas zu finden wonach man sucht oder ausschau hält sind überschaubar gering…

es bräuchte viel mehr kategorien und filterfunktionen… mmh… brauchst du zufällig einen gewindeschneider zum drechseln?

An important piece of context would be understanding how you’re searching. There are plenty of filters available, and you can also narrow your search to specific categories beforehand.

It also makes a significant difference whether you’re sorting by Relevance, where the AI-driven search effectively does the thinking for you, or by something else, such as Downloads. Depending on the sorting method you use, you may end up with very different results.

It also makes a noticeable difference what exactly you enter into the search. For example, searching for:

  • “75mm to 35mm”
  • 75mm to 35mm
  • “35mm to 75mm”
  • 35mm to 75mm

Each one is a different command for the search and returns different results.

Here’s another example: The tag search, as it searches for the tags the creator explicitly attached to the content.

  • tag: 75mm adapter

Why does Google sometimes make it easier to find stuff for you? There are two main reasons:

  • First, Google relies heavily on AI and often tries to infer what you’re looking for based on your previous search history and browsing behavior.
  • Second, it may be better at interpreting queries written in your native language, allowing it to understand the intent behind your search more accurately. Based on your German fairytale-style username, I’m guessing you’re German.
