That’s why I said maybe I’m misunderstanding. I know that English isn’t your first language and combined with my ADHD brain which misses things there might have been some sort of confusion between us.
If you’re talking about cutting threads into wood using a lathe + anything 3d printed - a jig, tool rest, chuck, or cutting bit holder, then the risk of failure is too great even when turning something as small as a tiny box.
But if you’re talking more like a threadbox + tap, then that’s different. It still might not be strong enough given the force required to cut wood but it’d still be many degrees safer.
He has a good design. no real danger with a thread chaser, if you know how they work you would see. The small bit is spun by the lathe. The chaser holds the work piece and is advanced along the bit by turning it slowly with the crank. most woods are not great for threading, threads tend to break easily. I found that gluing an already threaded plastic pieces into say an urn , works much better
Thank you for the explanation. I’ve turned big stuff like legs and small stuff like boxes and pulls, but haven’t done threads before. I’ve seen demonstrations by the local turner’s guild but they used a tool like this:
Hence my “maybe I’m misunderstanding” was a good add in. I’ve since looked up thread chasing and that seems a bit less dangerous than what I was thinking. I still wouldn’t trust it personally, but also I’m a very cautious person by nature compounded by the guild doing a show and tell of lathe-related injuries.
Anyways…I’ve derailed this convo long enough

yes, you can screw up your work piece very easily with that tool. The tool he has would work much more accurate and safer. still wood is wood not great for threading. I think a better plan would be to create printable inserts for small boxes like urns for gluing in. It would be a small market.
