X1-Carbon AMS Problems

I have been using any troubleshooting list I can find on Google and I even had Grok walk me through several possibilities to eliminate my problems with the AMS, I’ve been having these problems for a while now - I walked away from printing for about a year, and decided to come back a week ago, only to find those problems still waiting for me.

To put it in a nutshell, the AMS that came w/ my X1-Carbon keeps tripping “Motor Overload” errors approx every 45 seconds if I am using the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th slots. I never have issues AT ALL with the 1st slow.

I have checked each for wear & tear on the hole at the top where the filament first enters - the tubes inside the AMS, the tube from the AMS to the printer, and the tubes inside the printer - I can find no kinks / bends / wear / tear.

I’m using filament from various different sources - but always plastic spool (I quit buying the cardboard spools)

There are times (they are happening less and less often) where a print will go through completely w/o a single error - there are other times, like right now, where it literally trips every 45 seconds (roughly) no matter what I do.

I’m hoping there’s something out there - a 1-in-a-million that few people have experienced that I can do before I throw this heap in the garbage and buy something new…would really rather spend that money on filament tho - so this is my last ditch effort to get some real solutions before I give up and move on

The issue happens regardless of the filament type or the 3d file being printed.

The issue doesn’t happen 100% of the time - but the frequency doesn’t seem to be dependent on any variable i can isolate - it seems to be sporadic, but increasing big time in frequency.

My printer is updated w/ the most recent firmware - my software is updated as well. The AMS has been taken apart, all tubes reseated, everything cleaned

First, it would be helpful to see your setup. A fresh set of eyes may see a problem you don’t see.

Next, anytime anyone has AMS filament load issues, it’s always good to print Bambu’s PTFE guides from the Filament Track Switch - right out of the AMS is an area that frequently causes higher than normal resistance, this helps with that.

Finally, to help understand where your resistance is coming in, unhook your PTFE at the back of the AMS and manually push a length of filament through the PTFE so it goes all the way to the extruder. You want to feel for any abnormal resistance, or any place where the resistance suddenly increases.

So, assuming you’ve already tried everything - including the tips CarbonForge just posted - as a last resort:


Well, I don’t know how familiar you are with the voltage meter, but you could measure it. To be precise, it’s actually the amperes - or current - that need to be measured.

  • Start by taking a measurement from Slot 1 as a reference.
  • Compare the current readings with those of the other slots. You need to leave the meter turned on and measure the maximum current - that is, until the maximum current value freezes on the display. Of course, the error must also occur at that time.
  • Then the result should be that too much current is flowing through slots 2–4
  • This can also be the case, for example, if the motors are very old by now.
