X1 Carbon Extruder spring specifications

Hi.
I’m having issues with the extruder on my X1 Carbon. I think the clogs inside are not as close to each other as they used to be. However I opened the extruder (after a clog) and reassembled everything, including tightening the compression spring with the screw. But the extruder no longer seems to grab the filament strongly enough (I can push and pull it rather too easily).
I’m wondering whether the compression spring itself is now not wound enough.
Coud anybody tell me what the specs for this spring is? They are available for purchase on the BL store, but there are 5 different models, and I’m at a loss which one to choose…

Hi,

I am not aware that BL published the extruder spring specs.
Also, the springs on sale in the BL store are not for the extruder; if yours is faulty, the best option is to contact BL and request a quote for one.

What material are you printing to have regular clogs?

Regarding the lack of tension, that’s strange. By chance, didnt you forget to install the small spring tensioner? That’s the critical component to ensure the spring stays under tension.

I printed quite a few extruders back in the day…
And those springs to adjust the pressure on the wheel are really RELATIVE.

Ideally those knurled wheels should be able to securely transport the filament no matter what.
But they can only do so if they can bite into the filament properly.
Trust me - the designs of those wheels is more important than what some people might think…
ABS or PETG are not a problem, not even Nylon.
PLA and other filaments however can be rather hard, especially filled filaments.
The Bambu wheels are compromise between grip and self cleaning.
As long as nothing goes wrong or blocks all debris that might land in those groves makes out with ease.
Downside is that once things do go wrong and the grinding starts these groves do block up quickly.
Even more if heat creep was the cause.
I had transport rollers with ‘teeth’ like a screw for chipboard, literally cutting into the filament.
Next to no spring tension required, in fact I had running with just a setscrew to adjust how deep the rollers bite.
If I got a block in the hotend the extruder motor would stall but nothing would grind through the filament…

Take your spring and go to some shop that sells springs, even most RC hobby stores and electronics parts shops have a variety of springs at hand.
Find one with the same diameter and length that has slightly more tension than yours, not more than twice please.
Put it in and use the screw to adjust the tension until you can’t pull the filament through the blocked wheels - than add another turn to be on the safe side.
If you do this with some rather hard filament, like glow in the dark PLA and confirm with something soft you should be fine for many months…
