My new x1 carbon has been printing excellent for the last few days , But it has started to print in the air , about 3 to 4 mm above the build plate . The extrusion is normal and material is pla , I have tried rehoming the Z axis as well as restoring factory setting but the problem persists . Any ideas where to look next?
Can you provide details? Have you tried the simple approach of resetting all parameters to defaults? Does it happen with only one model or all? Does the model slicer correctly?
It’s hard to offer help without more data. However, if your print head is moving and no filament is coming out, that means filament is not reaching the nozzle. Did you try to reload it? Are you getting a successful purge on startup?
Forum Tip: If you make the effort to provide a detailed post, you’ll be rewarded with quality answers.
@Olias has asked some questions that may help us to make better guesses.
In the meantime, if my memory serves me right, the X1 uses a sensor in the build platform to detect when the nozzle makes contact, rather than a sensor in the print head itself. With that in mind, you might want to check for any debris or obstruction near the nozzle that could be contacting the build plate before the nozzle tip itself.
While this is somewhat unlikely given the efforts the printer makes to remove such obstructions during pre-homing operations, it is not impossible. Since the “vibration sensor” is in the bed, anything rigid enough to “tap” the bed could cause a false homing trigger. It wouldn’t even have to be part of the print head assembly, although this scenario is quite improbable.
If all else has failed and you are desperate enough, you might consider looking under the printer. The drive belt for the Z-axis lead screw is exposed down there. There would likely be other signs of trouble long before the bed got within 4mm of the nozzle, but it’s worth checking just in case.
Is it possible for you to record this and upload a video? if you’re able to record place your print part where the camera will see the entire process.
Extrusion amount is completely normal and the test print along front edge is also printed in the air so it can’t be the model type or model sliced gcode
I will check out the ideas that something is physically wrong with the homing but I do recall seeing the tip touch during Z homing , will also up load a video assuming it has not magically fixed itself during the night
Well as I had hoped turning it off overnight and back on in the morning seems to have fixed the issue . As much as I am curious to know what was the issues cause , I am happy enough to be using it again . If it happens in the future I will be wise enough to get a video.
Thanks to all those that responded with ideas on how to proceed
