X1C Clogging PLA+ eSun

Printer reports clog at the same point in several attempts with same model.
I am new to 3D printing and am trying to print a 2" square volume sculpture using eSun PLA+ Bone white. I am using the default settings which are within the suggested temp and speed range that came on the spool.
I read about heat creep and have tried printing with doors open, top open, fan 100% and with the PEI texture plate adhesion became a problem with the supports.

I am able to print using PETG if I cancel and start a new job - so I am not so sure there really is a clog or something else is happening. I took off the hot end after the first time and was able to remove the material from where it enters in the top. The whole unit is new and has less than 20 hours on it.

Should I be looking for a cold plate and use glue? It seems like plenty of folks are successful with the eSun PLA+ without much effort, but if I can get it to work with a different plate that is fine.

Thanks!

Update: I switched to PETG and am having the same issue. I am wondering if it is something about the model since it happens at about the same level each time. However, this time I waited 20 minutes and restarted the print and it continued for awhile. The print is at 83% now, and I am waiting to resume again. Is this a known pattern that indicates something that needs to be addressed in the printer?
