my x2d is now failing build plate detection every single time, I have cool plates, engineering, and textured PEI plates from BBL and it’s always bugging out at hte beggining of each print. My H2C is perfectly fine. I have the latests updates etc. what’s going on? is this my unit or a general bug?
Have you been printing ABS? If so, clean the lens.

not really no, I use my H2C for ASA/ABS.. X2D only really do PLA and PETG and various flavours of those
I’d clean the lens anyway. See what happens.
I’ve not had that issue on my X2D.
I think, build plate detection hates light coming in from the right side. The reflection will overlay the image from the qr code. Maybe that’s the case where you have installed it?
My X2D complains about build plate detection very often as well and as it has pointed out by itself, it is caused by light from the outside. Blocking incoming light has solved the issue. I may need to install some sort of blinds to the front door 
Try covering the side windows (one at a time) and see if that works.
Its looks like all old plates with small and framed “QR” are unrecognizable. Only new textured PEI plate with BIG & UNFRAMED QR works. Covering side windows doesnt help :(…..
You are absolutely right. When you want old style plates to be detected, then you need to put a sticker with new qr code on.
There are a bunch of models that you can 3d print. I find it a little pointless to 3d print the stickers, when you can simply use a regular printer, especially when you want to use the plate at up to 120°C. In this model P2S build plate codes - ArUco/QR Labels (Niimbot) - Free 3D Print Model - MakerWorld, the first comment contains PNGs. You have to scale them to the correct size, but at least for the cool plate super tack works perfectly fine for me.
But even with new codes, sometimes the printer doesn’t recognise it when external light reflects on the plate so that it over brightens the qr code.
