[X2D] Can't print large mix color objects (false runout)

Hi everyone,

I’m experiencing a rather unusual issue with my Bambu Lab X2D.

When doing a 50/50 mix color print using both toolheads, the right nozzle frequently throws a temporary “filament runout” error (code: 07FE_2000_0002_0001). After a brief moment, the error clears on its own and the printer initiates a nozzle purging sequence.

This is definitely a false alarm—the spool is completely full and the filament hasn’t run out at all. The constant, unnecessary flushing wastes a significant amount of time and material.

Here is what I’ve noticed so far:

  • Print Size: The issue does not occur when printing objects with a small surface area. It only appears when printing large objects.

  • Layer Height: The problem gets noticeably worse with thinner layer heights.

  • Material: I am using Bambu Lab PLA Matte.

How to reproduce it: The most reliable way I’ve found to trigger the error is by printing a cylinder:

  • Dimensions: 100mm diameter, 10mm thickness.

  • Colors: 50/50 mix (one color from the left nozzle, one from the right).

  • Profile: 0.08mm layer height (High Quality).

  • Result: The error pops up while the printer is still laying down the solid bottom layers of the cylinder.

My hypothesis (Temperature related?): I suspect the idle temperature of the right toolhead might be a factor. When printing smaller objects, the right nozzle switches frequently, maintaining a temperature around 190°C—and the error doesn’t happen. However, on larger objects, the right toolhead has to wait a long time for its turn. During this idle time, its temperature drops to around 80-120°C, and that’s exactly when the error almost always triggers.

Has anyone else encountered something similar with their X2D? Alternatively, could someone run my cylinder test to see if they can replicate the issue?

UPDATE: I figured out that it has something to do with the Bowden extruder. It shows filament presence regardless of whether the filament is loaded or not. Even when the filament is in the extruder, it sometimes randomly indicates for a brief moment that there is no filament. This triggers a nozzle cleaning cycle, which consequently wastes a lot of time and material. After a few of these cycles, it just gets stuck on the ‘no filament’ status.
