Do they make copyright reclamations based on publication from other websites? Or do you have to claim it manually?
@Tanklet / @MakerWorld Can we get a clear answer on what it takes to get an account banned on Makerworld?
There are so many accounts with dozens of (successful) copyright reports that keep on stealing models and countless community guidelines violations and yet they are free to upload.
It’s giving me the feeling that reporting them doesn’t do anything for the platform as they will just reupload models again. I have done my fair share of reports to confirm my feeling.
There have been accounts that got banned, yes. I’m not downplaying that.
They really should reward you maker points for all this work
Someone posted him here already i think. But he keeps on uploading stolen models. I keep on reporting them, they keep on getting removed and yet: He keeps on going.
i have 23 takedowns on his profile. All from stolen model.
which ones were stolen???
That is so not ok, that’s stealing. Anyone who would do that is a pathetic, talentless hack, unable to come up with their own ideas so they steal other people’s ideas and pass them off as their own.
Sorry, you have to follow the licence!
I’ve had copyright strikes against me because I modified/remixed a model that is based on Disney IP, but the source was marked as no derivatives. It’s wild to me that’s even an option when the source of the original was also a violation.
Feels like there needs to be some type of global guidelines around that.
If I’m reading this correctly, you willingly remixed and uploaded a model when you knew you weren’t allowed. If that’s the case, you should be banned.
To be fair I didn’t realize the license was no derivative at the time I remixed it. (until after the copyright strike) I did link the original model in my description and noted the work I had done. I wasn’t stealing someone’s work, I was enhancing for my particular use case.
I’m just wondering how someone can steal IP as the source material and then say that nobody else is allowed to remix said model? Seems like the legal footing is slippery at best in that scenario.
Ah, well I’m glad to hear it wasn’t a situation where you willingly ignored the license.
By no means am I an expert in copywright law, but I believe there is a grey area when it comes to fair use. I’m sure someone else reading this knows a whole lot more than I do on that subject.
Fair use is usually permitted to describe/parody but most of what we see in models are direct copies with the same name as original characters. That would never be allowed without consent of the parent company, which I’m sure is never obtained. That said, I don’t even care about that because it would be up to the IP owner to deal with it.
The thing that bothers me are folks that infringe upon the work and then say that nobody else can use it as the basis for new work. Just feels like any license associated with ill gotten source material would be null and void to begin with.
I’m not a creator, so honest question… What are the “points” people are obtaining and what value do they have for posting makes & remixes? Is it monetary, street cred, popularity, discounts? I’ve also seen people comment on remixes with less than 5-stars and the remixer (many of them) take great offense and replies with an ugly response demanding to know why they got such a “poor” rating. Why does this matter so much if someone is giving honest feedback? ¯_(ツ)_/¯
490 points = $40 so some people are very driven by gaining followers and generating points as quickly as possible.
I personally do like the feedback because I’m new to modeling and I want to improve as much as possible. So to me, I enjoy creating/remixing to fill a particular use case and then sharing because someone else might have a use for the item(s). The points are just a nice secondary benefit for me.
It makes all my spare parts and their expensive filament free.
I “remixed” this model and only used a portion of the original - the front of the “sweater.” The trophy base, text plates, and 3D sweater box with a lid are all original. Why should I not get points for this work, just because I gave credit to the original creator?
You did nothing wrong. This is a legit remix.
Some remixes actually take a lot of time and effort, and are valuable additions to the site and it’s users.
We should not tar everybody with the same brush.
Those efforts should not be punished.
But I do not have a better solution
I agree, but how to implement that is beyond me. I hope AI doesn’t get involved with this
