In theory, it shouldn’t matter if a package is turned upside down. However, as you suspect, your shipment may have been stacked or mishandled. When a package is placed upside down, it puts weight and pressure on parts of the product that were not designed to bear it. This can lead to strain, internal misalignment, or even permanent damage — even if the item was perfectly packaged.
In the case of my Carvera Air, for example, placing it on its side or upside down would almost certainly cause damage. The machine is designed to support weight only through its base — the top section is merely a protective cover and isn’t structurally reinforced. With machines like the H2D or the Bambu Lab X1/P1 series, the frame is more robust and might provide some protection, but there’s still a risk of deformation or mechanical issues if transported incorrectly.
Personally, I would follow the return packaging instructions carefully. If the support team is having a strict day, they could reasonably argue that they can’t determine whether the damage occurred before or during the return shipment — especially if the packaging wasn’t done according to their guidelines.
That said, I hope your return goes smoothly and that you receive a replacement unit in perfect condition, right out of the box.
