AMS gears and rollers locking up

No answer from Bambu Labs yet. I’ve been volleying back and forth with their support team a lot. They keep asking the same questions over and over, like they just want us to go away and leave them alone. It’s obvious to me this is a gear design issue that fails to switch from reverse to forward rolling. One that should have been fixed a long time ago.

hi this is my first post here so please be gentle with me . i too have had problems with ams spool rollers locking up and spools jumping about. after a lot of looking at the problem i found that it only did this when the filament was lower on the spool apx, 50% i found to prints on Bambu labs studio the first was ALL IN ONE AMS SAVER V5 + guide. i do not use his filament guides for the guides i use a FILAMENT GUIDE FOR AMS SAVE V2 which i found to be better.

since i have used these for about 900 hours now i have not had any spools jump or any roller gear ams. i am sure its down to the AMS pulling the filament ff the spool at the wrong angel instead of pulling down because the filament is at the top of the spool it is trying to pull the filament towards it;

hope this helps some people

I feel like an idiot after troubleshooting my same issue, I won’t admit to how long it took me to catch this, but am sharing it here in case this helps someone else…

Are you drying your filament while printing? If so, you may have turned on the “rotate spool when drying” option. This was my issue. The spool would rotate in reverse even though that filament was actively being used for printing. This would cause the roller to lock up and create the issue.

Why in the world would Bambu not have some sort of check in place to prevent this? All they would simply need to do is deactivate the rotate spool for drying purposes for any spools that are recognized in the AMS via filament being fed into the machine.

I’m having the same issue. My AMS 2 Pro is only a month old and it happens often. Connected to an X2D. Any luck on solutions? Do I need to look into having Bambu replace my AMS?

Here to join the lock up gang. Been printing just fine for 30 hours, switched to a full roll of Bambu ABS on a Bambu spool … I get the error and it’s just the gears locked up. I did what I could without stopping the print to take stuff apart. Seems to be happening only when it switches filaments.

I see a long 24 hours ahead of me helping this thing finish. The other 2 rolls were at about 75% and 50% and finished out fine. It’s the full roll causing problems!

printing on an H2D with 2 AMS pros. I’m stumped and super frustrated.

Try this, (working on an even better fix.)

I tried writing what you did before and then the forum never posted it. You are the only person that understands the issue, and indeed, all other ‘solutions’ are placebo’s or people that have an entirely different issue.
I now own 4, yes FOUR ams2pro’s that all have the same issue.

At first I thought it started because I had my first one do a drying cycle, but eventually all four started doing this.

I tried finding useful engineering contacts at bambulab, tried searching linkedin for software engineers that are working there, but without luck. I so eagerly want to inform them that with a little bit of extra code in the AMS firmware, they could fix this (a wiggle cycle)

The ■■■■■■ thing is that this issue is intermittent, and apparently not everyone gets the real ROOT cause of the issue.

can anyone recommend a way to get this info to them?

PS the only thing that is left that I want to try after already trying cleaning and relubricating everything with a lighter (fluorinated) oil and dry lubricant, is to ‘hone out’ the hole of the orange swivel frame, so it can move even easier. I noticed that this component quite easily deforms/banana shapes a bit, without a way to stabilize it, and I might try reproducing it with a resin print.

Everyone, READ devians reply!!!
I mean read it comprehensively. At least try to. I know tiktokbrain makes it hard, but he has the only explanation that is CORRECT.

All other solutions, workarounds and printed tools DO NOT TACKLE THE REAL ISSUE.

Y’all need to COMPREHEND the ROOT CAUSE if not bambulab won’t get triggered to fix the actual issue and will keep sending new AMS boards out after making you jump through the RMA hoops

PS2 I came back to this topic for the N-th time to see if AMS firmware 05.00 fixed it but unfortunately it seems only to be for some material-left-on-spool-estimation optimization.

I have 4 AMS units hooked up to my P1S. First couple years everything worked flawlessly. After one of the hardware updates from BL I suddenly have this locking up issue on all 4 AMS units. Doesn’t matter how full the reels are. I can be an hour or a minute into a single color print and I get the “overheated” error message and sure enough the reel is locked up. I rotate the reel just a little until it freewheels, clear the error and it starts printing again until the next lock up. I then rinse and repeat. BL should look back over their previous hardware updates to find where they introduced this problem because it wasn’t there before. It’s almost as bad as their Bambu Studio updates. After updating to their latest release the software arbitrarily assigns a random filament reel when I send the sliced file to the P1S. I have to change the reel assignment just prior to uploading to the P1S in order to get it to actually use the correct reels of filament. Not sure what that’s all about. Did their original programmers leave and get replaced by programmers that don’t actually understand what they are doing or don’t verify that their code actually works before pushing it out to their customer base? Confused.

I have what I believe is going to be a final fix to the sticking roller issue. I will be testing this “Design change” this month on both the AMS 1st Gen and AMS 2 Pro.

The design change will only take a few seconds per spool to install, but there will be a cost. My currently posted fix, has a limitation of two spool widths. Good news is that there is no limitation on spools width with this new design.

Stay tuned…

I did manage to create my beta version of non-sticking front rollers. On the AMS 2 Pro, it did not effect normal operation. It will take a trial period to determine if the spool sticking is fixed. I was not happy with the printed 20t and 30t gears on these front roller, as the detail was not fine enough. So I have sourced better gears…

I was unaware that the AMS 1st gen, needs to be disassembled to change the front roller. So the few seconds statement only applies to the AMS 2 Pro.

I will continue development on the AMS 2 Pro only for now, until at which point my design proves itself.

I’ve been fighting this on the AMS 2 pro for months as well. All slots. Ran perfect for the first few months I had it then started locking up. Full spools, almost empty spools, full spools with weights, nothing helped. Just recently it seems to have fixed itself except for slot 3. Doing a dual color print off slot 1 and 4 with a ton of filament changes right now with zero issues. Did Bambu finally get off their ■■■ and do a partial firmware update, anyone have any other causes than the rest of this thread or the many others? I’m super confused now that it magically doesn’t happen anymore except for one slot

Total hours on a AMS may affect the spool sticking issue. For my two AMS2Pro’ after 2000 hours there is little to no sticking. When they were new, they were very sticky.

When I try my redesigned front rolls, it will be on a new AMS 2 Pro.

Do you think replacing the Internal Hub Unit would fix the issue? That is until the new unit starts messing up as well.
