AMS Motor Overloaded, potentially loose spools

Hi, I recently purchased the P1S with AMS 2 Pro and I’m having issues with my first few prints. I’m repeatedly getting “motor overloaded” errors. Over the course of 3 prints, I’ve gotten this error probably 6 or 8 times. This has happened on 2 out of 4 spots in the AMS. I still need to try on the other 2. Upon visual inspection, everything looks copacetic (to my newbie, untrained) eye, except perhaps the spools in the AMS may be a little loose. Each time the error occurred, I took the possibly offending spool out, unspooled it, and tried to rewind a bit more cleanly. The picture attached show the current state of the spools (not mid print).

I’ve also included some pictures of my printer and AMS placement in case that might be an issue.

Sharp/acute bends in the PTFE tube can impede the filament motion enough to overload the AMS. You don’t have a lid on your printer, but if you have one, try with the AMS on top of the machine. Try and increase the radius of that curve. See if that corrects the issue.

That’s a normal AMS, not an AMS 2 Pro, right?

What does the PTFE curve on the far right look like, where you connect to the printer?

It is an AMS. PTFE too steep going into the extruder.

How would I go about changing the angle of the PTFE tubing going into the extruder? I could remove the PTFE from the retaining clip on the electrical/power cord thing, but it looks like that would potentially just move stress to where the PTFE enters the print area on the rear wall

You don’t have a lid on your printer, but if you have one, try with the AMS on top of the machine. Try and increase the radius of that curve. See if that corrects the issue.

Have you tried loading filaments directly from the printer screen ?

You may also be better leaving the filament slightly looser rather than rewinding, to prevent any resistance in the ams motors from the spools

putting the ams on the left is a good start.

edit: your spools are almost ended. try with a new spool and check if it behaves the same.

Okay, I made two changes and had a successful print. 1. I put the AMS on top of the P1S, and 2. I used a brand new, heavy spool. There were zero motor issues. Tomorrow, I’ll keep the AMS on top and try one of the other spools that have less filament on them and report back.

Another print, another problem. Now when I start a print, filament loads from the AMS into the P1S, gets to the extruder, pauses, and then retracts. And then this happens a few more times before I get the following error:

Extruding filament failed. The extruder might be clogged.

Note that the AMS is on top of the P1S and I’m using a basically full spool. This was what resulted in the successful print yesterday.

I’m seeing some issues around magnets being the wrong way in the buffer.

I tried the magnets in both positions and it did’t help.

Also I took the extruder apart and checked their wasn’t a clog/jam.

Does anyone have any other pointers for this issue? If not, I’ll create a new issue given that this is no longer an AMS overload issue.

After suffering through several spools of filament making it a}between 5 and 30 minutes between overloads, I’ve finally determined that the issue is, in fact, badly spooled filament. I’m using refills, and every color works fine in every one of the eight AMS slots… EXCEPT the black PLA Basic. I babysat a large print yesterday for six hours and it overloaded about 20 times. Compared with a basic PLA gold refill spool in the same slot. Issue happens regardless of AMS or slot.

I’ve tossed eight spools of black because I know they won’t work without someone sitting there watching. I can hear the spool starting to grind, and the filament looks exactly like the OPs photos. Loosening works for a bit, but the filament keeps getting pulled out of an inner layer on the spool and inevitably gets crossed under a different portion of the filament. Over and over and over.

I’d ask for replacement spools, but that seems like replacing bad with more bad. Literally the only color with an issue. I’ll just use third party filament for black until Bambu gets this figured out.

H2D, AMS, AMS Pro2, Bambu Basic PLA Black.

Make sure you perform step 4 when loading refills!

Also, consider adding centre spool dessicant containers (extra weight) and long necked AMS savers with an original AMS (newer versions work fine without for me).

I am having the same issue and the spool is stuck. Back it up slightly and it frees up. Looking at the design of this there is a gear assembly that free spins using the drive gear. It swings into place grabbing the roller. I can replicate the stuck roller using tweezers pulling on the swinging gear. If you take out the roller does yours have a moving gear also?
