Ams randomly reading filament is empty

My ams has suddenly started to change its display randomly from showing the filaments inserted to showing that they are empty even during printing. It happens also while printer is not in use and Bambu studio does not allow me to reload from the software I have to go to the ams and reload the filament via the touchscreen although this is great exercise as my printer is up two flights of stairs it is very annoying doing it sometimes 3 or 4 times before I can print anything. I have taken the ams to pieces cleaned and check everything there were no signs of wear and tear, no foreign or broken parts everything seemed ok but it still does the same thing. I have also tried the spools in different slots and multiple other spools but it does the same with all.Anyone any idea what the issue could be please? All help greatly appreciated,

One time spools are not recognised when they are added during a print, could this be the cause?

You can get the slot to check again from Bambu Studio.

Press the recognise icon (slot id with round arrow surrounding it) above the spool rectangle for the slot in question.

Pressing it should trigger the recheck press which will be visually displayed while it checks.

You can do the same from Bambu Studio device tab, AMS more details page. Tap the spool rectangle to get the pop-up context menu.

many thanks for your reply Malc that does nothing either on Bambu studio on my laptop ,pc or the handy app on my phone the only way I can reset the spool is on the touch screen on the XiC or by reloading the filament from scratch, but even then a couple of minutes later it can be showing as empty again. It is very odd this only started happening a couple of days ago the system is around 18 months old and has been working 100% for the whole time.

HI Malc This happened earlier today again part way through the print spool 2 randomly went to empty. ITS really starting to annoy me now. It happens random spools random times and at random intervals. I still can only reset the spool a the printer and not via the software. I have even tried to reinstall Bambu Studio as a fresh clean product but it still happens. Going to recheck the internals on my ams tomorrow try another strip down give it all a good inspection and clean again. Thanks for your continued input.

If you see the same lack of spool detection in Bambu Handy, the problem isn’t Bambu Studio.

Resetting the AMS units may help; it can’t hurt.

Resetting the Bambu Lab AMS ID clears slot assignments and reorders multiple AMS units, which is done via Control → AMS → Reset ID on the printer screen (X1/P1/A1). This is necessary when adding or rearranging multiple AMS units, which are identified sequentially (A, B, C, D) based on connection order.

Key Details for AMS ID Reset

  • Location: Access the function through the “Device” tab in Bambu Studio or on the physical printer screen under the AMS settings.
  • Method: Go to Control → AMS → Reset ID to clear the current identification records.
  • Multiple AMS Units: If using multiple units, shut down the printer, connect them in the desired order (directly to the hub), and then use “Reset ID” to re-register them in order.
  • Troubleshooting: If the AMS doesn’t correctly update after a swap, perform the “Reset ID” while they are connected in the new order.

For me it’s: people, things, life and everything inbetween.

Hi Malc finally got sorted out but I am not sure what actually fixed the issue or maybe it was a combination of everything lol. I stripped the AMS down totally thoroughly cleaned all the parts after a long inspection of everything put it all back together did the reset as you suggested and its all working again hurrah  Thank you for all your support.
