Are these thumbnails AI generated?

I have a half dozen of them, and when they were in storage, I recreated my favorite one to be 3d printed (leaf tray - shameless plug).

oh my god, you scared me. Clicked that and at first sight it seemed a tray in the form of poop and only then i realized what it was

After looking at a lot of these examples

Is there some sort of crypto-bro-styled “make money and get free stuff with these easy AI tricks” video somewhere that’s getting people doing this?

Looking at a lot of them it’s the following

  • logo looks like either a meta generated avatar or they typed “3d printer logo” into an AI
  • Banner is a different ai generated image too with the same kinda styling
  • a bunch of simple designs that appear hyper realistic
  • Mediocre actual files
  • Spam accordingly and aim for just raw downloads and likes with the chance at someone going “wow this square flat tray printed well (because it’s simply a flat tray) so I have to rate it
  • they all have that clean desk and plants aesthetic to them too

Unfortunately I’ve come to a point where I am going to dog on some of these super simple designs

The fact that someone decided to draw a square, extrude and thin extrude, then add some fillets and say “yep that’s never been done before” is wild to me

If you type tray into mw you get thousands of results, so the intent to point farm by some of these accounts is there from the start

It’s not that you can’t do anything that’s been done before, but maybe before uploading, people could say “is this a saturated item already?”

The beginner might not do that, and the users with dozens/hundreds/1000+ uploads know exactly what they are doing, they’re intending to mislead and deceive to farm points

So I guess yes, in a way, I am starting to dog on simple prints now

I might have to go through my own designs later and ensure I meet quality standards I expect on mw

(P.S I’m not having a go at you, just wanted to add on to what you were saying a bit, hence the reply)

I get why people are doing the clickbait/bait-and-switch with ai-generated covers and models that are “meh”. @johnfcooley put it great: “there’s two reasons for the pics in the first place. Mislead and laziness”.

Misleading people is beneficial only for the “creator” and if one’s so lazy - why even put out the model if you can’t be arsed to do bare minimum of making a photo of the actual print? And I’m with @jaayjeee on super simple prints with ai covers.

If I see the thread here correctly it looks like overall creators are in favour of honest representation of models, so AI Generated images that have no direct connection to the model are BAD. That’s quite universal among creators. Next in line is “hyper photorealstic 3d render” but I see there are some caveats of “if the render represents what would get printed” So I think it’d be fair to say that “renders bad” if there’s no chance to print it that way and honest person would said it’s deceiving.

How would honest creators here think about another type of cover image: “Look at this real, but not 3d-printed object” and the model is either imperfect scan or an attempt at re-modeling the item for 3d-printing?

Case in point: ghost candy bowl

My opinion is that the author shouldn’t and seeing 4th image in the gallery - didn’t even had to, the model would stand on it’s own.

what the what? yeah reported both the model and the profile on that one. That’s also deception. Just show the print, the inspiration can be in the description for crying out loud.

Woaw! Another level! Once again not the same object. I find this deceiving.

Strangely, I don’t feel deceived by a basic renders because it’s clear to me that’s not a real pic. But it’s probably my own bias or experience as a designer. But other might be deceived by them, idk

But on the other hand, I have a problem with hyper photo realistic render. Where they are mimicking the layer lines and staging a photorealistic background.
I’m impressed on the technical level, it super clean. But if even me, I have to look it hard to distinguished if it’s a render or not. I think that’s deceiving for 99% of the users. And on top that they might even get away with publishing a real photo completely since the render is so convincing. The example I have posted earlier is a good example of what I’m talking about.

What candy corn is that? Need some of that.

I like the glaze like gloss on the left side. I guess we can fire our prints in a kiln now?

Still want that candy corn.

my first thought was ‘wow, did they bondo, polish and paint this piece?’ then i realized it was ceramic, the eyes gave it away of course.

I appreciate it a lot. None of this is actually free. It cost us in money, in time, in plastic, and in electricity. I try and show respect to all of those things; especially since it’s the community that helped me get to this point.

Sometimes I see people treat the community as numbers to conquer, to rake in, whatever. I think sometimes people forget that it’s a bunch of individuals like you and me. It’s easy to say it’s free, it’s not that big of a deal, but to me, I see it a little differently. I know what it is to get burned, so regardless if it’s my best friend or some random person I’ll never even interact with, I still want to give them the same level of service and make sure they have a great time.

  1. This forum is meant as one of the avenues to give feedback to MW. If the bar is that any feedback must first be the majority’s view, then I’ll say it’s an impossible huddle to cross.

That’s my point, the discussion here is trying to push a single viewpoint as representative of the whole community, and the majority argument was me trying to push back on that. I tried to show contradictory evidence to the fact. We can extrapolate more from 40000 than 40, even if neither are fully representative - 40,000 > 40.

It’s not a scientific sampling. There’s lots here who may agree with you and lots who may disagree. Case in point is I disagree with you but haven’t voiced my opinion until now. I’d wager there are others.

What you are arguing for is deception (aka lying) which far too many are ok with. This is a moral thing. If AI generated thumbnails actually agreed with the actual print that would be different, but these people are just approximating the models they are shilling for. They use attractive imaginary scenes to misrepresent what the model actually is. That is dishonest.

And I’m another that passes on AI fronted models. Not a fan of misrepresentation and deception.

I think that’s what it is at the end of the day. I’m just going to pass on these models when I see them

They won’t get my like, download, or boost.

If I keep seeing it I’ll block them, and if there becomes to option to report them for misrepresentation that won’t affect my account, I’ll report it when I see it

I don’t think it is your differing opinion that is the problem. We have a lot of differing opinions on this forum.

It is a difference of ethics and morals.

It would be the same as someone saying, “I think eating puppies is fine.” Then the arguments ensue about why it is right or wrong.

It is not saying one is right or one is wrong, because for some cultures eating dogs is common.

Some cultures say that is is alright to treat others poorly because they are in a lower class, but other cultures say that all should be treated equal.

The problem I have with your statement is that it clashes with my morals. I think misleading someone is the same as a lie. I think lies are wrong.

“What you are arguing for is deception (aka lying) which far too many are ok with”

Again with the moral high ground in this thread, imposing how people should live their lives. It’s your opinion that this is something everyone should worry hugely about, an opinion which you have every right to have. It’s not everyone’s.

So, you are looking to buy a car and the salesman shows you this in an AI render…

But what you actually find when walking to your car is this…

IMG_0138

Would you feel deceived?

And thanks for telling me what I think. I wouldn’t have known without you telling me so good on you!

Look, you can deny that using AI images to shill models that only somewhat resemble the AI image is moral, fair, right, or whatever, but you’re still wrong. If the models aren’t depicted accurately the images are dishonest.

I won’t discuss this any more with you. It’s obvious you have different morals and different ideas of what is permissible/acceptable than most of the rest of us. You think deception and lying for personal gain is ok and I don’t. There. I can tell you what you believe/think too.

I quit long ago to refer to this topic. @MakerWorld @BambuLab have already shown that they have no interest in interfering in this matter because in the end the creators who do those practices are the ones that makerworld likes and brings traffic to the website. They also, in silence, attested that certain users that have personal contacts with them are favored, as one user mentioned twice in this same topic (i have screenshots). No penalties, no nothing, those users get points/money with those deceiving practices and that’s it! Reporting is also a “No No” because those same users, again, won’t be punished like me or you.

I am getting tired of this AI deceiving practices, those affiliate links that are not allowed (stated in the guidelines) and yet remain, those deleted comments/ratings that do not favor said creators and so on… again, i quit responding here some time ago just because of that.

As i always said, money brings money and that is the same here. Big dogs get to turn bigger while small honest creators remain in the shadows imposed by the same rules that should penalize every user. Me, i just want to complete some points for the A1 mini that i promised to my young daughter and then will let this roll while i observe in silence. My simplest models will remain here as normal.

Some people in this topic like to be deceived and if they are those kind of person, then i only imagine they also deceive others the same way or else they were not here defending such practices.

Will now grab some more popcorn and just watch the show, like i was already doing.
For you, honest people, have a great day
