Bambu do not allows me to use my printer until I ‘upgrade’ the firmware!
I consider that Bambu representatives are not the one who have to decide what firmware I am using! The one currently install on my printer was good for my needs! If I want to upgrade to a different firmware should be my decision!
Please stop this practice… and let me have the choice to upgrade!
Is it possible that you have downloaded a print profile with setting that is only supported by a new version of the firmware and therefore you get this message?
I would agree with you assuming you are using a similarly obsolete version of Studio.
I don’t think it unreasonable for studio to not support obsolete printer firmware. Current X1 firmware is 01.08 so the version suggested in your screen shot is also obsolete.
Ah the joys of dealing with a company who are arrogant enough to know better than their end-users!
It becomes more and more clear that Bambulab is a walled garden and you play on their terms only.
Oh knock it off with the anti-bambu talk. If you don’t like their system, go play in someone else’s garden. Using Bambu Printers is a Joy, despite your best efforts to soil the day.
It isn’t unreasonable for them to want to keep things in parity as far as firmware and software versions. You know, as one advances so does the other, and you can’t just jam things together forever when one system changes but the other doesn’t. It deals with the security of the whole pipeline too, as having one outdated system leaves a gaping hole in security.
Oh knock it off with defending everything Bambulab throw at us. A negative opinion of Bambu is every bit as valid as the fan-boy view that some seem to have.
Imagine if your PC maker forced firmware updates on you. That has NEVER happened despite critical flaws found in the motherboard BIOS firmware of literally every manufacturer. Why? Because the customer OWNS the equipment and it is their choice, and only their choice, what happens to it after receiving it and installing it in their home or business.
Are there times when it would be in their interest to install the latest firmware? Absolutely but it is their choice and can’t be forced on them by the manufacturer.
Firmware on a PC is a little different than a connected device like Bambu’s printer’s. It’s not just the firmware on the Bambu Printer in-fact, but the whole of the OS for the device. It deals with all the security in the same way that Windows does, and it’s just as important to keep it updated for security reasons when connected to the world wide internet. It’s be more proper to call it the system software.
Okay, and something like this attack vector isn’t uncommon. People break into devices this way. There is that possibility that someone can find an exploit in the system software for the Bambu Printer that’d allow them to execute malicious code when loading up a slice file. If they just let it go and let people use whatever firmware version they want, then they would leave that exploit wide open; to the extent that someone could get something trending on Makerworld and deliver that payload to any number of people. Security researchers have uncovered and demonstrated these sorts of exploits in other devices numerous times.
You cry about wanting control, but you’re compromising all of our security for it. The firmware isn’t like Marlin; this isn’t those days. It’s the whole OS of the device, and that goes way beyond just reading gcode and telling the print head to move around.
Again, you don’t like it, go play in someone else’s garden. I want Bambu to take the security of the device serious, and that comes with trade offs like this. I want my printer connected and secure, and so I’m not gonna cry about them locking out old firmware, but I am going to push back against those that try and make the system insecure because their lack of knowledge, to put it nicely.
Exactly! The firmware and software being used need to match. It is not about control and power as others are suggesting (“Bambulab is overreaching!”, “They have to much control”, “My purchase, I can use it how I want!”); it is about compatibility! They just need to match/be compatible.
It does seem like it is a cloud thing. I ran into it this morning as my X1C is still on 1.07.00 firmware. Yesterday I was able to send prints via the cloud from Bambu Studio 1.9.1.66. Today no dice. I was however able to send directly to the SD card. I haven’t updated the firmware as I anticipated moving to X1Plus once the warranty had expired.
ahh, funny thing is that I just moved my office to a different room yesterday, and when I set my printers back up, I updated the firmware on all of them. Looks like I accidently timed it just right.
Hi Josh, I am not complaining that Bambu X1C is not a good printer. I have two of those, and I am happy with my printers… anyway, today, after I print some parts, I got the message that I cannot use my printer if I do not upgrade the Firmware! My question is WHY! Is a product I buy with my own money… I do not want someone to stop me from use it! No mater the motive! If I want to use the same firmware for the next 100 years … it is my choice! Of course, I will update my machine sooner or later, I am not a moron … I do not want someone to stop me from use it just because they can!
Keep in mind that you are still using THEIR servers to send prints. So if the firmware has a vulnerability and you refuse to update the printer, it could also affect bambu itself.
Some banking apps on your phone will also lock you out if you don’t update the app in time.
We would like to bring an important notification to our customers.
The X1 printer firmware version 01.06.xx.xx or earlier has a bug which can cause a failure to upgrade/downgrade its software to and from 01.08.xx.xx.
Due to a misconfiguration, the cloud interface has detected older firmwares installed on the printers as outdated and disabled the file sending to the printer via the cloud.
This misconfiguration is currently reverted to ensure everyone can print without any problem.
If the issue persists, please reboot the printer and restart Bambu Studio / Bambu Handy.
Once all the infrastructure changes are fully implemented, we will update everyone with a detailed guide on how to perform the firmware upgrade safely to solve this problem.
