Bambu Handy Filament Runout

Hi, I have a quick question: I have a Multicolor print and use 4 Colors in my AMS (All Bambulab PLA Filament). If one filament runs out, could you select another spool to finish the print over Bambu Handy? Or do I really have to wait until I get home to put another spool into the AMS and click resume?

(It is just a Test print so it would not be a big problem if the last layers have another color).
Thanks!

The only way this would work is if you set up the “autofill” before the print started. Otherwise you will have to move a spool over to complete the print. It cannot be done from the Handy app. That would however be a nice feature to add.

Before you let spools of filament run out in your AMS, please have a look here:

The issue is the way Bambu is securing filament to the spool hub with tape and the propensity that has for pulling the tape off the spool hub and ingesting it into the AMS filament feed mechanism.

Filament used to be secured with the filament tail poked through a hole in the hub. That was causing some people problems so they switched to the tape method which seems to cause a lot more problems.

Anyway, see if you want to risk ingesting tape into the filament path, gumming up the filament feed gears, and ultimately even pulling tape into the extruder. Some reports of that as well. Anecdotally this seems to be a bigger factor after drying filament too since it seems heat helps set the adhesive and make a stronger bond to the filament.

The AMS filament failover works great except for that one little detail.

I have another question about this topic. Yesterday I printed a bigger modell with PLA. I had 3 spools loaded in my AMS (Polymaker PLA but different colors). I started this print in the afternoon from my PC, same as usual. The print lasted for 8 hours. I had maybe 200g of filament left on the spool on slot 1, and thought ok if this spool runs out, i can put in a new spool with the same color I had left in on slot 1… After about 2-3 hours i took a look and I saw that the printer automatically choose the filament from slot 2 and finished the print with this filament. Color was different.

Today I started a 3 hour print on my smartphone again slot 1 of the AMS with only 100grams left and slot 2 was a new spool. I thought ok this time those colors combined would not be a big problem so I went for it and hit print. This time I got a message on my Smartphone which said “filament ran out”…

Is there a preset in Bambu Studio on Windows which says take the next spool? I can´t figure out why this is different on my Smartphone on the second print…

Thanks and best regards!
