Connecting 8 AMS 2 Pro to H2D

Has anyone else tried this? I saw the website said H2D can only have 4 AMS units connected but why not more? I have connected 8 (4 per side) using the 4-in-1 adapters but the software doesn’t recognize more than 4 units. Is there any real reason I can’t just use more AMS 2 Pros other than software locking me out? Technically I can connect my HT units but id much rather use the larger auto feeders. I have external power for all of them and want to just simply have all my filament connected at once.

You are being artificially limited.

There is no hardware routing reason as they only require a path from the AMS to a nozzle and instructions to perform such actions.

A likely limiting factor is how the AMS units are powered. They are not independently powered, but they gain their power from the printer itself using the bus connection cables that connect them.

The new AMS PRO 2 uses an external power adapter, but for the heating/drying function and not the connectivity. I believe this was to allow backwards compatibility (don’t tell the A series users whose ability to use it is delayed to Q4 at the earliest).

If the AMS units derived their power independently, the argument for the software limitation would be void.

Hmm that’s insightful. I’m hopeful that with the arrival of H2C, they will launch a proper H2 series multi-device managing tool and remove the soft limitation of AMS units. I’m primarily operating a print farm so yeah 8 AMS2 Pro units might seem overkill/dumb for the hobbyist level, but I actually need this for doing my day job effectively lol.

Player gotta play.

They will not.

The H2C is coming in two versions, the full H2C and an upgrade path from the H2S & H2D.

This will have no impact on any existing or future AMS units due to the requirement for backward compatibility.

The only potential glimmer of hope would be a future AMS 3 Pro Max (see what I did there) that may allow more than 4 spools. This would necessitate a power supply rethink as the extra bus solution would become overloaded.

Only until the hardware power supply issue is addressed can they remove the software limitations.
