Considering swapping my H2D Laser Green Door for Standard Glass

This is awesome! Now all the nay sayers who said “YoUr eYeS are goNnA tUrN inTo ToAsT!!!” Can go pound sand! lol

Just like with firearms, a safety is a mechanical device that can, and will fail.

All I’m saying is be very careful guys. I’m not against anyone replacing the door for normal printing, but maybe put the green glass in a box that contains something else that needs to be installed in order for it to work BELOW the glass, so anytime you wanna zap stuff, you have to physically move the green glass, and it reminds you to put it on? Idk. I do a lot of stupid stuff, but lasers terrify me and I won’t go anywhere near them.

That is exactly what I have done. The E stop switch is in the packaging with my green door.

You’re not understanding and think we’re being wreckless morons, its confirmed that you CANNOT defeat the sensors nor override anything and by swapping the green for glass you are disabling the laser and need to swap them/it back to use it.
You also cannot blindly send gcode to make the laser work. Which is a convo in another thread about LightBurn, whereas most major brands like Bambu, Trotec, Rayjet, SnapMaker, and several others, don’t work with 3rd party software for the very reason of safety. Meanwhile you can do whatever you want with a Creality falcon - so please direct the “be careful guys” at their forum where they actually need to hear it.

The point of this thread is exploring the possibility and intention that Bambu Lab built in for us to as a consumer - swap the green for glass and vice versa and maintain safety.

Thank yoi

I literally never said you are being reckless, stupid, an idiot or anything else… what? I was giving tips on how to improve safety, nothing more.

I might have to do this. I don’t really care about the green look that much but the plastic is a dust magnet.

Congrats!

and a dog fur magnet

You apparently haven’t seen photos of peoples’ eyes/retina after getting popped by a laser. You only get one set of eyes. They cannot be replaced.

You use your “leet text” to ridicule those saying to be careful.

First, those of us saying to be careful can’t prevent you from being stupid. You are free to do whatever you want. The willfully ignorant aren’t the people we’re talking to.

My posts are aimed at the people who might not consider the damage a laser that can even cut metal can do to the eyes. Nothing is faster than light. A stray reflection can do damage faster than you can even realize what’s happening.

Now that people know how to defeat the interlocks with magnets, and many don’t like the green glass, some may want to rely on the safety glasses. It’s just an erosion of the protections.

You don’t seem to appreciate the danger as you tell everyone to go pound sand. It will be interesting to see how this all goes. 3D printing sees lots of mods. When lasers get involved, mods can expose users to dangers. People just need to know there are dangers. What they do with that knowledge is up to them.

Meanwhile you ridicule advice that could potentially prevent a gruesome accident that blinds a user or leaves lines or dots in the image the eye sees.

If you can modify the printer safely, operate it safely, etc, go ahead. If you inferred I/we think you’re a reckless moron from warning people about dangers to their eyesight, you inferred wrong. I don’t care what people do who know the risks and how to mitigate them. What I do care about are people at the other end who might not catch that shiny reflects, that there aren’t second chances, etc.

Not everyone here understands the dangers. If you do that’s great. But there are even kids that will end up with these things.

Those of us posting cautions are just trying to get others up to speed in thinking about the risks.

If the post doesn’t apply to you, ignore it.

Green door made really good base for my AMS rack that didn’t fully fit on the table, it is good for something…

You apparently haven’t read the part where we’re only replacing the door, which effectively disables the use of the laser. Nobody said anything about having intentions of defeating the sensors, you made that part up to justify everything you just said.

You apparently didn’t read Aeon Joey’s original post. He said everything but.

Read it. He starts off saying he has the laser combo but absolutely hates the green door. It changes print colors and darkens the view looking through it.

Next he cites the clear door at $44 and how he would be willing to swap doors and then adds in the same sentence “BUT I also see Bambu sells the green glasses”.

The implication is that he would swap out the green door for clear and use glasses to protect himself.

That’s it in a nutshell. He did say he was willing to swap doors “BUT” there are green glasses. So while people get upset others would dare to tell people about the dangers, the fact is these discussions provide roadmaps for people who don’t understand the dangers to cause great harm to themselves and others.

I’m not saying these discussions shouldn’t exist. I’m only saying the lasers are very dangerous.

That’s exactly why I was so confused I was getting flamed by the OP. The initial post was talking about completely removing the safety component(green glass) and using laser goggles/glasses instead.

I agree on all other accounts. While discussing removing safetys for experiences users is fine, discussing the potential dangers and safety protocols for those that ARE NOT experienced is even more important/valuable.

Well, I decided to test it tonight and all the worry is moot. As expected, it will not even initialize the laser without the green door.

It seems to have discrete sensors for door closed and wrong door, it only gives the wrong door error when the door is closed. Nice extra layer of safety. I’m continuing to be impressed by the engineering and refinement in this machine.

Oddly, the safety switch not only has to be installed, it also has to be clipped on a specific spot on the right side to work.

well be me, poor dude who needs better support material printing capability but have to wait to JUNE to get the H2D normal version, when the laser is off-the-shelf

That’s very good design from bambu, they really tried to fool proof everyone lol
