Corcelain Contest

I see a new contest with Corcelain is coming.

I didn’t know Corcelain before but I think it is a great idea. I was missing some standard vessel like a glass or a mug that would be available to everyone and that could be combined with 3D printing. Corcelain meets these requirements but has one drawback. From what I see, it is only available in Japan and it is a niche product.
And here is my question to the Makerworld team: will this product be available in the future in Maker’s Supply so everyone can buy it?

Wait what? Corcelain!? I’m curious what’s all this about I never heard of it either.

I read both pages but am a bit stumped… is this kiln fired prints? ceramic mugs that exist with screw bases and we are designing bases for them (really cool!)?

Or is this really smooth good looking pla matte something “mug” shaped prints with the feets and cuteness yada yada?

Please tell me someone figured out the ceramic printing! *fingers crossed *

agreed, i never heard of it before, and even when i looked for it on the internet google auto corrected it to porcelain XD.

i don’t think i can have my hands on it either, so i will be skipping this contest so that i wont be posting something unrelated.

But embrace yourself for the amount of unrelated uploads to that contest.

I can’t find anything on the Web with details about “Corcelain”. The only references are from BBL.

But assuming this is filament with a ceramic filler that can be sintered in an oven after printing to cook off the plastic and leave you with a solid ceramic part, it’s not that unique an idea. There are similar filaments for metal out there, too.

The parts shrink when sintered, and dimensional tolerances can’t be tightly controlled. People who use this stuff for mechanical parts print “upscaled” to account for the shrinkage, and areas that require very tight tolerances are left oversized to be machined after sintering.

But if all you’ve got is FDM and you need a “hard” part, these are your only options short of printing plugs for a casting.

These are just porcelain dishes that you can buy in a Japanese store.

Corcelain is porcelain with screw holes. By adding extension parts, it can morph into cups, flowerpots, toys, and more, allowing for limitless customization. This is a growing ecosystem for co-creation that you can hack, personalize, and improve, depending on your infinite imagination.

These are a specific porcelain product that is already fired and can be incorporated into 3d printed project using a threaded hole on the porcelain - there’s a link in the contest page that directs to the storefront where the items are for sale.

Ah. I did find that, then.

Now I understand. Duh.

That would be a pinnacle of creative stagnation.

I would really like to try this, could you share one of these ceramic filaments? Would an oven work or would I need a special setup?

Thank you for the replies!

Where can we buy these to test some out? Amazon I can’t find any, and the web as above, when we search it’s quite difficult to find them (in english)

Is there a specific term or alt language searchable for more info on this?

I love the idea of adding an articulated mess around the cup making it impossible to put down thus irritating millions. I gotta get on frustrating humanity as quickly as possibly haha.

Thanks! This contest will be interesting but without physical cups for us to really test on it’s going to be a bit tricky (like you guys said tollerances etc.)

I was aware of ceramic printing since years back (someone modded a cr10 to do alt materials was a post about it forever ago) but it must have come a long long way since 10+ years ago. Cool project/contest!

Their website says they aren’t shipping products until March. I’m assuming we are just going to 3D print the 3 styles they are sharing instead of the actual product?

Wow you guys never miss anything!

In case you are still wondering, Corcelain is a company with one design, and it is a cup with a screw holder. We are probably just going to be trying to make it cooler… I think. Handles, floppy legs, etc.

They have multiple designs.

So it is not a contest, it is a promotion and a quite questionable one.
No filament available, no clues, no real details, no nothing.
Seems Makerworld still needs more content without anyone being able to make use of the contest creations…
If you want to advertise, fine, but don’t turn it into a contest while failing to provide ALL the requirements and details upfront.

https://ootori.co/release/corcelain
On that website we see it is a global design contest, not a Makerworld thing, they are riding on the train.
It is glorified mug for crying out loud and I totally fail to see the point why anyone needs a contest for a product that isn’t even available!
What comes next a contest to design a handle for spare hammer heads or or such nonsense ?
Considering their price for a simple cup is close to $30AU plus shipping I find this contest a real joke …

I checked into it as well and shipping murders everything as well. Just too pricey.

That’s like 4 rolls of esun pla+ filament here in canada common! No brainer zee cup is staying in his kiln.

Maybe this is more for local, still really cool, give it 6 months and standard copycats to fire up their machines and start embedding screws into coffee mugs.

Wait… why don’t we just…make a coaster style cup bottom for our own western mugs with a screw on it?

that’s pretty cool, i’ll see if i come up with something

Everything is explained and described here : MakerWorld x Corcelain - MakerWorld

The product is not available yet, that’s why they provided the files of their mugs. You can print them in 1:1 scale, you don’t have to buy them.
Honestly, for me this is one of the most interesting contests in a long time.
