End of spool issue

I’m seeing issues with lightweight spools, but not seeing this one as an issue.
I’m running into something on a few prints with all of my X1Cs. (it could very well be a light spool issue, but they are being weighted).
As a print runs, the filament comes off the spool when empty. I am finding the printer doesn’t use up the long length of filament in the tubing, but tries to rewind it to a spool no longer attached. I’m having to detach the feeder tube from the back of the AMS, and remove the length of filament. Then, once resuming the print, it will switch to the next spool as planned.
Ideas?

What’s supposed to happen if the filament end is past the AMS first-stage feeder switch is that the printer will purge filament until it runs out at the extruder, because, as you note, it can’t be rewound. I have seen this happen. Does the feeder LED on the AMS turn red when this happens?

No red. Just the blinky white.

In that case, either the feeder did not detect the runout, or you unluckily had it run out after it came off the spool but before the end went past the sensor in the feeder, but in the latter case it should have just spit out the filament into the AMS.

I have had the same issue happen to me, where the filament came off the roll, but it didn’t use it all, yet it was unable to retract it back into the AMS.

A manual option to tell it to purge (mid print) wouldn’t solve the problem, but it would make dealing with it a lot less painful.
