Error: HMS_0500-0300-0001-0002 Is my A1 now a brick?

Ok, so here’s the event that lead to this post. Started up a print and turned around to do some modeling. I normally check the first layer, and follow the printer by sound until I can hear it putting down that first layer. 10 minutes go by and I realize somethings not right. I turn around and see the USB-C and the PTFE are hooked on the back side of the gantry and the toolhead hard to the left pulling hard on the USB-C and the PTFE in an effort to get to the poop shooter. (Photos below replicate event because I didn’t think that I was going to need pictures for this).

I jumped up and hit the power switch.

Once powered down, I backed the toolhead off and released the USB-C and the PTFE.

Knowing this would happen again, I taped a carboard “bar” around the right hand gantry tower, making it long enough to prevent the USB-C and the PTFE from passing over it.

Turned on the printer.

The printer powered up.

The toolhead gave one “click” and threw the code: HMS_0500-0300-0001-0002 (this will be hence forth referred to as “Brick”)

Checking the bot on Bambu Handy and I get: “The toolhead is malfunctioning. Please restart the device.”

  1. Check the wiki: Power Off/Power On. Click. Brick.
  2. Power Off/Power On. Click. Brick.
  3. Power Off/Power On. Click. Brick.
  4. Doing the something over an over again and expecting different results is the definition of insanity.
  5. Power Off/Power On. Click. Brick.
  6. Read the wiki some more.
  7. Reset the USB-C both top and bottom.
  8. Power Off/Power On. Click. Brick.
  9. Wiki says it may be the internal components, but it gives no instructions.
  10. Power Off/Power On. Click. Brick.
  11. Maybe the USB-C cable is damaged.
  12. Grab a new USB-C cable out of my electronic hardware supplies, strip it out of it’s packaging and switched it out.
  13. Power Off/Power On. Click. Brick.
  14. Wiki says it may be the internal components. That means a teardown of the toolhead until I find all of the damaged parts.
  15. Power Off/Power On. Click. Brick.
  16. Grumble. This is my first 3D printer. I bought it with the idea of learning 3D printing. I’ve had it almost 3 months. I’m not scared of building electronics or ever creating PCB’s. But this is my first 3D printer.
  17. Power Off/Power On. Click. Brick.
  18. Fudge cake in a field.

OK, any body got and bright Ideas before I go voiding all of the warranties… if this thing has any.

Since the problem seems to have been caused by the tangle preventing the X-axis from moving, I’d next have a look at the A-axis stepper motor and belt (at the right-hand end of the horizontal moving part).

Maybe the belt has lost some teeth, or the motor has burnt out?

When the printer is turned off, does the X-axis move freely from side to side if you push it? Any roughness, especially at the position you found it stuck in?

Ask support to diagnose the issue with a log file uploaded to them , looking at the cable it appears to of pulled the plug out ( z axis fitting ,right ) so it might be the board , or just a loose wire,

You are correct, it did pull the USB-C cable stop out of the X-Axis motor mount housing.

I checked the motor and the belt.

  • I removed the X-Axis housing and did a visual inspection. The belt isn’t missing any teeth and the belt doesn’t have any ware, tears, or rub marks.
  • Without power the motor is running free and loose along the X-Axis.

UPDATE:

This afternoon I had an idea:
Power Off/Power On. The toolhead gave one “click” and threw the code: HMS_0500-0300-0001-0002
went to maintenance and ran a calibration. Calibration ran and gave me the following:
Extruder eddy current sensor is abnormal; the sensor is probably broken[0300-1800-0001-0004][250242].
Just for fun, and because I was thinking maybe it’s the new cable, i plugged in the old cable. The old cable got to the “Home toolhead” screen and stopped. didn’t even throw errors. So it’s defiantly done for. Now it’s just an issue of figuring out what else is wrong. On a side note, I did a complete clean out of the nozzle and extruder assembly just to ensure that was not part of the issue.

Also, the unit told me, “Unable to home the tool head” before spitting out those codes.

Probably won’t give you anything new and you may have tried it already but power it off and leave it unplugged for about 15 mins (probably way longer than needed).

You have to earn it.

Do things like read threads/posts, comment in other peoples thread/posts, @user_1815443243 people in a thread, ect…

It took me about 3/4 hours before I was able to post my own thread.

Make sure your contributing. Don’t trash other people. Ask question like you did here. people will respond.

yeah it’s for sure going to be the USB cable.

I actually damaged a y belt when my hand was on the table and I stupidly leaned forward to look at the printer… then the bed on my A1M shot forward, hit my arm and the belt skipped.

There is a distinct difference between belt skipping, and the stepper motor red lining. If you damaged a belt the vibration compensation test will indicate high latency detected on said axis.

Either way whatever is damaged, the cool thing about these little printers unlike my core xy is everything is fairly easy to tear down and replace parts. They are fairly well designed for something so in expensive.

My two biggest concerns are the USB-C plug on the toolhead, and the z-axis sensor. both are major components for the toolhead. Everything on the tool head is an easy replacement, it just bothers me that something that is so obvious as the cable/tubes getting hooked on the gantry hasn’t been spotted or talked about within the community before. It’s that stupid Irish luck of mine. If I didn’t have bad luck, I would have none at all.

I built a temporary fix for it (see attached image), and I’ll model and print an upgrade part. Maybe Maker world will give me some point for it. :smile: .

Alright, the cable arrived, and has been installed. Unfortunately it did not resolve the issue. I’m getting the following codes:
[0300-4000-300752] Z-axis homing failed; The task has been stopped.
[0500-0300-0001-0002][300751] The toolhead is malfunctioning.
[0300-1800-0001-0004][300752] The extruder eddy current sensor signal is abnormal; the sensor is probably broken.
I checked the sensor leads to make sure they where secure and they where.
I’ve ordered a multimeter off amazon. It will be here tomorrow to test the continuity of the sensor.

If I recall z axis homing failed was a fairly common issue on the A1 standard model. There are some youtube videos about that. It might not be 100% related.

Yah, I have seen the video’s and I am aware of the solution, but I need to follow the process as well as I am willing to grant Bambu the right to establish the process as long as they are willing to send the parts to fix the unit.
Both issues, the hang up in the gantry and the Z homing error are known issues that new customers are not made fully aware of prior to purchase, so general responsibility does fall to Bamba on the matter.

Does anyone know how to test the TH board?

I got a 3.5Ω reading on the eddy current sensor reading, and based on the Wiki’s range of 0 - 10Ω that should be fine.
