Firmware 01.08.05.00 - Authorization Control is here

Which literally reads as “This person doesn’t just bash the company i want bashed, they must be trolling because their opinion differs from mine at a fundamental level”

I get you want a specific narrative to exist, but i don’t personally agree with you on this matter, you’re free to call it what you like but a difference of opinion isn’t trolling

What?

There’s a separate error code for that.

Just flag all of his posts as spam, seems appropriate.

With quite a bit of wrong/uninformed arguments just for the sake of arguing. And the posts themselves are deliberately made in multiples because apparently replying to multiple people in a single post is somehow bad. (Doesn’t that go against the forum rules?

or just mute

Anyway, trolls aside - anybody knows how this check for “genuine bambu studio” goes? I’m on gentoo, so I compile my stuff and i gotta wonder - how people who try new features in BS go about their way in testing. Would recompilling on different compiler and with different libs (but still supported) make BS “not genuine”?

I know, it failed to detect it while printing. It detects it when idle though. This is dumb and a firmware bug surely.

I did too. I checked and confirmed that the device was compatible with MQTT and home assistant, and able to integrate with both my home systems, my displays and workflow. Now, after spending the money, that is no longer the case.

Ok, and where on the official product spec is that listed?

Doing research means looking at what is officially supported and advertised, this is what you paid for, anything else was a bonus

SD card updating was introduced in 01.08.02.00 so to our can probably only rely on being able to downgrade to that version. Handy might currently be able to downgrade to an earlier version (I don’t know as I don’t have an X series printer) but who knows how long the earlier versions will remain available for. Link to the firmware file is on the wiki. Now may be a good time to download and back it up somewhere, just in case

Doesn’t harm my experience and changes to software will continue to push out some users eventually, just like when games update portions of their game to require new hardware by raising the minimum specs and deprecating older things like dropping DX9, or do you also expect game developers to also be expected to keep supporting those ancient video cards because they sold you a product that originally worked there?

League of legends, one of literally the largest games on the planet quite happily pushed out updates that removed the ability for any machine not using TPM 2.0 to play their game, software requirements change over its lifespan

I mean flag them as whatever you want, having a differing opinion isn’t against the rules so i’m not worried

Which forum rule says i have to address everyone in a single post?

I do see one about name calling and ad-hominem though, so you might want to be careful of that

Outside of that not seeing anything specifically forbidding me from replying to users individually

Didn’t see this before I replied to them, got an inane response as expected. Taking your sage advice and bowing out

I do not believe there is a specific guideline, but rather

  • it is considered good etiquette
  • it will result in less notification (“noise”) for those who are subscribed to a topic
  • IIRC the Discourse forum software itself will prompt you itself after several individual replies that you might want to consider a single reply with quotes

I played with this today, and here is what I learned. In regular mode (not local) the Bambu slicer communicates with Bambu servers which are in the US, by the way. There are two parts to Bambu Studio communications. With the newer versions of Studio, there in non encrypted communications for things like Makerworld access, and encrypted access when you send up a model to print. Orca slicer does the same and nothing is encoded. As of today, Bambu server works either way, encrypted or non-encrypted. They are NOT blocking Orca slicer.
In the printer, the X1, I think encryption starts after 1.08.02. Before that, no encryption. and Bambu servers work with either currently at this point.

Now, what is interesting, encryption is not new and every browser and most software does it. Like your browser connects to Google and encrypts between your browser and Google. The difference here is that Bambo has installed a certificate in Studio, so communications can’t be unencrypted for inspection. My router typically unencrypts data from a browser so it can scan for viruses. With Studio, this isn’t possible. Very secure programs like bankiing software do this all the time, but why Bambu? What are they hiding? I let it go with financial companies I trust, but I don’t fully trust Bambu at this point.

So, if you DON’T upgrade firmware past 1.08.02, you can use Orca slicer or Bambu Studio. After that upgrade, ONLY Bambu Studio will work. Orca slicer COULD upgrade if Bambu gave them the certificate, but they said they won’t. For me, I had to tell my router to skip Deep Packet Inspection for Bambu Studio traffic or it won’t work. And the mobile app continues to work also. If Bambu ever REQUIRES encryption, then that will be the end of Orca slicer for Bambu. Local mode is the answer, BUT you can no longer use your mobile app on the phone.

Unless Bambu reverse this decision, I think no more Bambu printers. Elegoo, Creality, and others are making very good printers now at cheaper prices. The Elegoo Carbon is VERY similar to an X1Carbon at $299 and their “AMS” will be here in 6 months. So don’t know WHY they are doing this, but it won’t help their sales, guarantied. A solution to a problem that doesn’t exist.

I knew of the plan that Bambulab wants to cripple the printers because they are either too stupid, malicious or both to properly secure their network (I never asked about cloud support). Chinese companies are and always will be sneaky. Their way of sneaking into networks is criminal and a government requirement. Bambulab may not want to be like that, but they have to be. Just like Huawei, they want to have control over everything that is in the WLAN. But I didn’t care about LAN mode until now because it was convenient to view the print job remotely. Well, those days are obviously over. Router blocked for this IP (inbound/outbound communication) I’ve just deleted all unnecessary Bambulab software on both my Mac and my phone, enabled LAN mode and installed Orca Slicer. Too bad I now have to recreate my filament profiles in Orca as I don’t know a way to export the custom profiles, but so be it, Orca Slicer seems to be the solution, at least in the medium term.

Orca will import all of your profiles from your BL account if it still exists. You’ll have to temporarily unblock the BL cloud of course.

So what i’m hearing is, its not against bambu’s rules, got it

I completely agree. I bought my x1c only a few months before the firmware announcement. The decision by BL to disregard the legitimate concerns of what appears to be the vast majority of owner/users clearly illustrates movement toward the actual business model. The hardware is only a hook to sell subscription service to make it work. That’s the future revenue stream. This heavy handed approach rings of rule rather than benefit to the user base. It’s calculated, and purposeful. If security were the true issue here, BL could have found other paths to resolve the concern without alienating so much of their existing userbase. It’s the actions, not the words that tells the story. BL says dont worry, have no fear. This is for your own good. Nothing that BL is doing indicates any interest in the PEOPLE, that paid MONEY, to purchase a PRODUCT that they would like to continue use in the way THEY want to. The trolls in this thread are entitled to their opinion, such as it is. Their opinions however, do not change the fact that many are displeased with the ACTIONS of BL, and will not agree with, nor support this heavy handed approach from any business whom chooses to adopt it. Apparently BL has chosen this moment to draw a line in the sand. That’s fair. It’s their company to do with as they choose. Selling subscriptions to a captive base is a viable model and some choose to buy into it. It worked for apple and DJI. It just would have been nice to know it before the purchase. I know, its not here yet. Im pretty sure BL will continue to foot the bill for cloud costs and bandwidth forever. Now lets here the cybertroll reply (or not)

lol, i have not been wanting to reply to this thread, but this is pretty ridiculous, where is the subscription? and you say apple and dji also have subscriptions, since when? lol…

and yeah in this thread anyone that does not agree with the rant is immediately called a troll, you either agree or you are a troll or a chill, it’s ridiculous…

Not calling ou a troll, but open your mind a bit. Bambulab does not have security issues. They simply want to tie you closer into their environment. Next step might be that the AMS will refuse to use non RFID tagged Filament spools combined with an odometer that prevents simply moving an RFID Tag from one spool to another. Same like Inkjet and Laserprinter manufacturers are doing since years.
The technologie is already bilt in, they simply have to move this bit from “0” to “1”.

You think this is an aluminium hat? Maybe!
But we will see in the niot so far away future. Believe me chinese Companies have a plan. They are not like the Taiwanese or Korean Companys. They ar highly analytic and brillinatly educated. Ever worked with a Chinese? The will outperform you in speed, knowledge and logic. Believe me, I had worked for them  Not saying the abover counts fpr me but I have seen how fast they can act when needed. They are well trained robots
