First layer is horrible

I have been pretty happy with most of the prints so far but they have all been on the textured build plate. I just got a smooth plate and it revealed that my printer is not producing a very good first layer, in fact it’s horrible, the quality I would expect from one of my cheap printer. I have been told in a FB group it’s because the nozzle is to close to the print surface and also told there is no Z offset adjustment on this printer.
Is that true? If so how can I get this printer to print the near prefect 1st layer that Bambu claims? Also some have said maybe wet filament. My filament is kept at 30% humidity or less and I got the same poor 1st layer with a roll fresh out of the vacuum bag from Bambu.

I don’t see a leveling problem, I see areas of under extrusion.

% humidity is a measure of the moisture in the air, not the filament. New filament just out of the bag usually contains at least some moisture.

If dry filament produces the same result, calibrating the flow ratio should improve the surface.

calibrate you fiament

Do you notice any elephants foot on smaller prints?
EF compensation can help your Z offset.
I’d say it’s either your Z offset or your Flow Ratio.
It looks like the filament is under-extruding. Try bumping the flow ratio up by 0.05 or 0.1 and examine the difference.

No I can’t recall seeing that but I will look and see if I see it in future prints. How does one adjust the flow rate on the A1 mini? If it flow rate why does it only happen in some areas of the print? Wouldn’t it affect the entire first layer?

Did you change the plate type setting? I’ve been using mine for a few days and have had no problems.

Yes I did on some, forgot on others but didn’t make a differences.

have you tried a glue stick or hair spray?

I never use hair spray, too messy but I almost always use glue stick and it has worked well, I don’t think that is the issues.

The flow ratio is in the filament profile. It usually defaults to “0.95”
It could also be a heat issue.

Well it’s not just OP having this issue. I have similar problem on 2 3rd party build plates. One is a carbon fibre style peo and the other is a black pei.

The first layer is garbage (blobby and rough) on both.

No amount of changing plate type in Bambu Slicer helps however with the Bambu supplied plate the first layer is perfect with the exact same settings.

No idea why it’s doing it but if anyone finds a fix i’ll be very happy.

Well, weirdly enough, my issue has fixed itself for the 3rd party black pei smooth/textured plates. Prints great now, haven’t changed any settings, go figure!

Peo plate still a little off but working better now.

Use calipers & measure the thickness of the 3rd party & Bambu plates.

Bambu by default had the first layer width set to 0.5 for better adhesion I’d assume. Set it to 0.42-0.45 and you should see a difference.

I found the problem, my bed is not heating properly. No mater what I set it to or it’s set to in g-code it never gets above 32c.

My first layer:

I am happy with it. There are some small artifacts that I assume are due to filament humidity and a bed that is not completely clean, but I am satisfied.

Maybe try another filament? I used overture and have had great results

Can i ask what calibrations have you done to get it perfect like that?

are you sure you aren’t set to cool plate in the slicer?
