Follow the Prusa INDX fiasco for a laugh

I have an H2C for several months now, and its a great printer. But I also was intrigued by the Prusa INDX system. I’m really glad I didn’t go that route. If you have been following it, its a mess. So adding INDX to a Prusa Core One + Gen 2 with 8 nozzles costs about the same as a H2C with 2 AMS 2s. (Total cost for everything.) But the Prusa is finally. shipping now (kind of) but not really with hardened nozzles. E3D made the first nozzles but they weren’t really fully hardened like they said so they are offering refunds. Now there are 8 nozzles vs. the 7 with HD2 but the H2D build plate is much bigger, and the two AMS 2s dry your filament. (The Prusa just hangs filament on the side.). But wait, there is more. I heard there is some nozzle temp problems because Prusa measures nozzle temps with an IR thermometer that hasn’t been real accurate. Bambu uses an RFID sensor with theirs for much more accurate readings, it appears.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had Prusa products over the years, but it seems they always take multiple years to fully get working. I think I called it right this time.

I own a Core One with BondTech INDX. The only issue I’ve had with it is the nozzles not being properly hardened. E3D did not make the INDX nozzle, BondTech did. They were machined in-house. Also, I’ve been printing 8 color prints successfully with very minimal purge waste at 13 second swap times.

The nozzle temperatures are indeed assessed with an IR window and there maybe some issues with inaccurate temperature readings but I haven’t experienced this. In fact when I run a temperature tower with the INDX it compares similarly to my H2D and Nextruder calibrations.

As of now my Core INDX is printing away at a Totoro Cat Bus that will finish in 8hrs. Versus 17hrs on the H2D.

The Core One L with INDX build volume is 300 x 300 x 330 mm. While the H2D (with both nozzles) is 300 × 320 × 325 mm so they really aren’t that much different.

You may feel disappointed by Prusa’s new machines, you may have had not so pleasant or enjoyable experiences with the older or newer ones, and feel the need to express (read rant) that here (you should have done it on Printables). However, in my opinion, and feel free to disagree with it, I find the heading under which you’ve chosen to post (“Follow the Prusa INDX fiasco for a laugh”) as being derisive, distasteful and uncalled for.

This comment is not a personal attack. It’s just how I see it.

So where do I buy this Core One L with INDX?

Actually, this topic has come up many times over the years, and the only thing that really changes is the hardware itself. Prusa and Bambu simply speak to two different kinds of people, and that’s perfectly okay. There have always been fans on both sides who call the other a “failure” and hope their favorite brand comes out on top. But in reality, healthy competition is what keeps the whole industry vibrant, innovative, and exciting for all of us.

In the end, these companies follow fundamentally different philosophies, each with its own unique community - and that diversity is something we can genuinely appreciate.

I own several of both, and competition is always good.

I own an H2D, Core One INDX, a Mars 5 Ultra and an Ender 3 (which is mothballed). As for the H2D and C1 INDX? I love them both because they do different things. I do all my functional printing on the H2D and all my multi-color prints exclusively on the INDX because it’s faster and produces much less waste. End of the day I’m neither a Bambu fanboy or a Prusa fanboy. If something comes along in the future that does engineering filaments as well as the H2D and does fast multi-color as well as the INDX then I’ll probably buy and use that printer instead (assuming it’s not junk).

Lots of good printers out these but really and H2C and a CORE One L and INDX 8 is the best almost equal products to compare. Even these two are pretty different. Tool changers like the INDX are great IF you print mostly multi-material/multi-color prints because loading those 8 filaments into 8 unpowered hotends has to be time consuming. There is nothing wrong with that. The H2C is for more occasional multi-color/material where filaments can stay snuggly in an AMS until needed and then I can start prints from anywhere, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Why I like Bambu is because when they release a product, it just works. They don’t need to constantly mod it with “upgrade kits.” Maybe when I was younger, the constant upgrade projects would be fun, but I’ve switch to the person that just wants it to work, mostly. I can’t say the AMS always works, and I do need to run repairs often, but the difference is with PRUSA, many repairs are not for maintenance, but rather for engineering updates because the original one never worked great. Now Bambu has these not-fully-designed products also (Track Switch) but its not a full printer, but a add-in.

Its not right to make fun of INDX, because if it had not been a bit of a rushed f-p, if would overall have been very good for the industry. If it fails things are going to look grim for prusa.

Sadly there are issues with the hardware due to poor design (centering of nozzles, exposed coils, and it seems the nozzles themselves can be a bit temperamental?..), the profiles are not (yet) polished and there were issues with printed parts being far too weak. All indicating that the product was rushed instead of properly engineered.

The question will be whether they (the developers), and their followers will be able to admit that. And come up with a version 2 (that very likely would be a good and polished product) Products that dont work very well dont get sold a lot. (a bunch of paid youtubers and fanboys salivating about “poop” and change times is irrelevant if your hardware doesnt work properly) - and the competition (bambu et al) is working on toolchangers too…

Sometimes I wonder if Prusa pushes out new designs with known issues so they can sell a high-priced upgrade later.

I think that despite launching new machines, to keep up with the technological developments of their competitors, Prusa holds (and maintains), at its core, the old school tinkerer mentality. Haven’t tried yet their new machines, but my 4 year old , 4 toolhead XL still runs like charm, very reliable, and delivers surprisingly good results each and every time I print.

None of this really matters given that Prusa’s consumer market share is around 5% or lower.

Both companies missed the target this generation. IMO. Tired of seeing companies go halfway and call it good. especially when the “perfect setup” is fairly obvious.

Multi toolhead printer that can accept a filament changer to atleast one of the tools, preload each filament ahead of time, enclosed with a heated chamber to atleast 55c(70c would be gold), 350mm, 370c-400c hotend and 140c bed. 1.5 pitch 9mm belts, closed loop stepper motors. toothed idler gears instead of smooth(where applicable).Exchange some of the noobie bells n whistles for these far better limits. Then call it an enthusiast printer to try and keep down the forum noise.

Nozzles preheat before swaps, for 5 second tool changes. The AMS toolhead always preps and purges the next ams filament while another toolhead prints. Will need a mechanical cutter as close to the hot section as possible. Minimal wasted filament and time.

Imagine 4 tools with different filament types and a 4 roll ams to hold the 4 support materials on the 5th tool(or more colors, for a total of 8 with only the space of 5 tools needed and only one ams needed, or none if you only want 5. Only filament limits being above Ultem. The $350 you save from not needing a 2nd ams for 8 materials can go toward the other hardware. 5 p1s toolheads are probably cheap and the ROI is already there.Just need to turn them around and make a carriage.

those 5% will be closer to 0 than 5 if they continue to half-■■■■ their products like this. Fanboy karens screaming “open sourxe” only make for a small fraction of the market.
