Horribe quality top layers

Hi All,

I bought my X1C in November 2023, and had only a few small issues,
happy with my printer. but for now, I can’t print any good looking top layers anymore. It looks like the nozzle is scraping the surface.

I’m using the AMS, doesn’t matter which slot I use.

I tried calibrating the machine, that didn’t work.
any suggestions how to fix this:

Hey @CornmeisterNL

you can do the following:

  1. Re-check the bed leveling to ensure that the distance between the nozzle and the bed is consistent across the entire print surface.
I got this by my own but with a complete new calibration it went away (it takes about 15 minutes).

  2. One of my problems was the temperature of the nozzle with which you are printing. Verify that this is correct and not too high or too low. Maybe you can tell us with how much degrees you are printing right now.

If you need further help im happy to assist you

What material are you printing?

Different brands of PLA,
Bambulab PLA, Prusament, Eryone,

I have the same issue with PETG prints. In my case I had to switch to Orca Slicer an adjust the flow rate of the top and bottom layers. I did the manual calibration and adjusted the flow rate which is spot on now but top layers show severe overextrusion. Therefore I switched to Orca Slicer and reduced the flow accordingly for the top and bottom layers.

@HaiFred,
Thanks for the reply,

I tried some full calibrations a couple of times, this does not help (yet), will give it another try,

I print my PLA at 220 degrees C, (like I always did, even when there were no issues)

You can as well sent me here your settings of your print, i will take a deeper look into that so your top layers are good again
Can you may tell me which vendor you are using for the PLA?
Is it bambus PLA?

Different brands of PLA,
Bambulab PLA, Prusament, Eryone,

How can I send you my settings ? by uploading a .3mf file ?

You can sent me some screenshots if you want or sent me the 3mf file that would be possible as well

As well you can tell me what PLA you´ve used in the pictures above or doesnt it any matter what PLA you are printing right now?

I’ve uploaded it to my mega account:

It doesn’t matter what PLA I use, Issue happens with all of them
the uploaded file is the print I did on the photo’s (black PLA).

This file ive inspected but i need your current printing config from your printer

ahh, with the Printable Area size etc ?

Correct and degrees etc.

a .zip with screenshots.

btw, these are just default settings which I was using for two months.

In the Filament Settings i would set the Max volumetric speed to 21mm^3/s

Try to set the layer height in the Quality Tab to 0.24mm

Try to set the top shell layers in the Strength Tab to 4

Try to set the Sparse infill in the Speed Tab to 230, Internal solid infill to 230 and the Gap infill to 230

Let me know if the result are now better.

Will give it a try, thnx!

It’s an impovement! looking a lot better. still a little ‘rough’

Thats nice to hear, now we have to fine adjust these things.
Let me take a look again into your files and i´ll sent you the parts which you can lower or increase.

But i’m wondering now.
For 2 months, I was able to print with default settings, ultra smooth top surface.
When mid print now, I can hear the nozzle scraping over the infill, just like the nozzle is a little too low.

Your settings absolute made an improvement, but isnt it a workaround instead of a fix ? (don’t get me wrong, I’m pretty happy with the improvement!)
