How to minimize layer lines when pausing/resuming print

A picture below of what i am encountering.
I am printing rods that that need to contain magnets. I pause the prints in the bambu slicer, put a drop of superglue into the voids for the magnet, gently place the magnet in the void, wait 10 minutes (for glue to set) and then resume the print. When I do this, I almost always get a line across my prints, like an x/y shift of a single layer or worse. How do i reduce this from happening?

Most of the time that comes from cooling

Either be very fast or redesign the part.

10 minutes is likely too long

If 10 minutes is really far above the actual layer time, you’re inviting cooling lines like that. (benchy hull, layer time shrinkage, this is a rabbit hole)

Instead of waiting 10 minutes for glue to dry, try using tape in addition to glue [tape to hold it down now, glue to hold it down later], or use a CA glue with an activator - 2 seconds and its done

You didn’t mention which filament you’re using; some engineering-grade materials don’t respond well to being paused.

any advice for resource around part redesign for this issue?

ok going to do a test where i go much faster and see if an effect. hopefully magnet doesn’t fly out!

It really depends. I was going in with the assuption that you designed that part.

What are the purpose of the magnets?

we did design the parts, in fusion. The magnets are used to keep to parts in loose but stable contact with each other.

Suggestions for geomety change is a force fit hole for the magnet that doe not need glue. Maybe try something like a hex hole for a round magnet. or a crush rib in the hole. Just be careful not to move the part on insertion.
The simplest solution is put the drop of CA glue in the hole and put a little activator on the magnet. It will set before you can continue.

apply something like fuzzy skin that will hide the problem.

I’ve never had this happen. But as others stated time is of the essence. I tend to hover and watch for the pause when needed (filament, odd magnet or part insert, etc etc.) Cooling is evil :slight_smile:

another simple solution is add a color change in the area. forcing all the other layers to have the same pause.
This is more a cluge.
It is noticeable because there is a change from the other layers. What I am saying is make it so the other layers have the same Pause. Maybe ramp in and ramp out with other geometry. (ramp time).

Could the model be split so you print it in separate parts?
I’ve made plenty of Easter eggs where I pause mid-print to insert a message, and I’ve never seen this kind of layer shift. I know it can happen, but it’s usually fixable by tweaking the model’s geometry or splitting it into sections.

If you’re up for it, share the model — more brains usually means a better solution (or at least a more entertaining discussion). :wink:

Do you really need glue? Or wait for it to dry?
If you pause the print to insert the magnets, aren’t they sufficiently encased at the end of the print?

My computer is showing an error for the YT video, so I am not commenting on what is in it.
On my, more or less, stock X1C you need something holding the magnet from not jumping out of the part onto the head. Not the nozzle but other components of the head.
you might not need something with a weak magnet, that does not have enough force to lift past the nozzle. Depends on your nozzle.
The problem is embedded magnets need to be strong enough to over come the embedded distance in most cases.

i changed it to making the hole 9mm deep, providing 4mm head space between the magnet top and the print head. This seems enough that i don’t need glue to hold it down. It is possible to make the magnet rattle inside the rod if you shake it though, and glue would prevent this.
