How to utilize pre-printed supports?

Using marlin based printers, Creality to be specific, I’ve figured out how to print support structures to a specific shape and by knowing how to pay attention to which layer is printing, I knew when to be present to insert the pre-printed support structures within prints requiring them. I do it this way to ensure I have a nice, flat surface there when finished compared to what’s left after you typically remove support material, a ragged, rough surface. The pre-printed support structures fill the gap minus 0.2mm in height, then I apply blue tape to the top. That’s so the nylon filament has something to stick to and will provide a clean flat surface.

I have to admit that is something I have not experienced yet with my P1P, will know after this next print what that surface looks like after using tree supports.

But regarding what layer is currently printing, it’s not something I can figure out at the moment using my P1P and Bambu Studio within Linux Mint, . I see no information available as to what layer is currently printing.

Am I missing something?

TIA for any clues

Currently the P1P does not support that, the X1C does, so it will most likely be added to the P1P in future firmware updates as well.

But you can simply add a pause in the slicer at specific layers and add whatever you want to the print then.
Add the following G-Code to the slicer for the layer you want the pause:
M400 U1 ;pause
G28 X ;home XY

I may just have to try that. This is the first printer I’ve got to say I’m worried I’m gonna loose a finger some day! For that very reason it may be best to pause and not attempt to slip something in while the extruder is in motion!

I doubt anyone ever has lost a finger from a consumer 3d printer, but getting your hands in the way while the toolhead moves might cause the motors to skip steps and ruin the print.

he didn’t mean it like seriously! Just noticing how much I typically go and stick my finger in there to feel a surface/whatever on the other 4 non-BL printers while printing, but with this one it seems best not to because there is no way to predict which way it’s moving next and the moves inbetween printing are super fast. Just not used to that yet.

Hehe, well, if you manage a loose a finger, you might at least get a world first archivement
