I just created First Real 3D Printed Mystery Box!

I have come up with a fundamentally new concept for 3D modeling. Imagine a process where the user sees only an automatic preview of the object before printing — this could be, say, a mysterious box with a surprise. However, when they send the model to print, the real model hidden inside gets printed, which the user only sees after the printing is complete. It’s like opening a Kinder Surprise: you see the wrapper, but the real fun comes when you open it and discover the toy inside. This creates a surprise effect!
And here is the first model to test the IDEA!
How do you like it? Would you print blind mystery boxes?

Don’t particularly like this, your expectation is that people waste filament and time and hope they like whatever it is? Makes little sense to me

Also profile rules specifically request a picture of the printed item, which yours doesn’t have and therefore cannot be published, if you don’t want to show the item you can only have the STL

Why so serious! It can be themed item.
For example. there can be 10 blind boxes with different fidgets. It’s fun!

I like the concept, it might be fun at gatherings & fairs…
but if I printed this, it would just be a 1 time print to see how it worked…JMO

actually you can see item if you just download and slice model by yourself. The box is created with 0.01mm walls, so it just dont print

I get tired of seeing junk posted as printable… why would I want to print unseen junk?

Some have used this concept for a while when they show a photo of something that has nothing to do with the actual model. They just didn’t call it a mystery box  . That practice is not allowed. You may have good intention, but sooner or later someone may report your upload. Points can be taken away, or you may get banned.

Its not quite the same. The model actualy is the the same that on the cover, but prints only the inner thing.

My guess is that we don’t have to wait too long to find out. If your upload generates a sizable downloads/prints and is not taken down soon enough, there will be hundreds or thousands of mystery boxes on the platform. A simple 2D model or an affiliate link is the surprise inside the box

Etsy does not allow mystery boxes for a reason.

I for one like the idea (although I most likely won’t be printing it). It’s the same as KiwiCo, lego surprise minifigures, gadget subscription boxes, advent calendars (crazy popular over here right now) and indeed the kinder egg. You could argue that these are all wasted resources but still people enjoy it.

A while back I sent a gcode to my girlfriend to print on her printer, something I designed for her as a surprise and it really worked, she loved it. Both the process of anticipation while it was printing and revealing itself and the end result.

That said, the model needs to be of a certain quality and uniqueness to satisfy the end user, and that can be extremely challenging. So you really need to dig into a niche and create a following where users know what they are in for and know they can trust you to create an awesome model they will like. And I think that is really hard, but if you manage I think it’s an awesome idea.

And as others pointed out, the challenge is of course getting reported or getting poor reviews if somebody thinks ‘meh’ even though the model is awesome for others. But good luck!

Well… me being me, i gave you a download because i was curious.
Got to say… not impressed at all, not even a bit. For something that should be a nice and fun “surprise” it sure is… ordinary and one of the most hated things by me because they are everywhere in the platform.
But hey, i am sure that you will have lots of downloads because people will want to know whats “printable” just to be disappointed.

Good luck

But that’s the rub - it has to show what you print and that it is printable to post a print profile. Your profile image is a render (not allowed). For a print profile you have to have a photo of what actually prints. The people saying your profile violates the rules are 100% correct.

Whether anyone reports it and if Bambu acts on it are another story. But by putting it in as an Exclusive, you are opening yourself up to some significant penalties if they lower the boom.

This will be a fun game, let me guess.

  1. Something with the Rock’s head?
  2. Something with octopus tentacles?
  3. Something with flexilegs?
  4. A Benchy

That was a very mature way to express yourself! I’m totally serious. When people criticize our ideas - Ideas that we may love, We often feel emotional. Too many of us(myself included), then go ahead and spit out a defensive statement that we don’t even realize is defensive until afterward, and we create a downward spiral of argument that we can’t let go of. To say that you are feeling too emotional to respond to something at the moment is very mature and I applaud that!!!

You don’t have to download the design to see what’s inside. Just click the preview and zoom into the box to see the content.

I thought at one point clicking at the preview counts as a download. Maybe I remember incorrectly, or the counting rule has changed?

I will guess…HueForge
