Idea to Support Designers: Commissioned Work on MakerWorld

I know this might spark some strong opinions, and I apologise in advance…

MakerWorld is clearly dedicated to supporting designers through the various incentives they’ve put in place. The more designs that are uploaded, the more users are attracted to the platform, ultimately benefiting everyone involved.

I’ve been thinking about ways MakerWorld could support creators in a way that benefits everyone involved—including MakerWorld itself—and I would like to request that MakerWorld consider this as a potential avenue to explore: having in built features for commissioned work on Makerworld.

Not everyone wants to dive into 3D modeling, and as 3D printers become more common in homes, they’re transitioning from specialist tools to everyday appliances. With this shift, more people are being exposed to 3D printing without necessarily knowing how to model themselves. Offering a way for users to commission models from designers (who have opted into this service) on a platform they already trust could be a great way to help MakerWorld grow.

Many designers on MakerWorld essentially have a portfolio of work on the platform, so potential commissioners can review their work before asking for commissions.

Regarding pricing, it would be up to the designer and the commissioner to come to an agreement based on the complexity of the model, the time involved, filament for prototypes and other factors.

That said, there are definitely potential issues to consider, such as trust, scams, or disputes between creators and commissioners. These would need to be addressed to ensure the process is safe and smooth for everyone involved.

Another point to consider is who uploads the design once a commission is complete: the designer, the commissioner, or neither (if it’s just for personal use, maybe not at all)? All options could be made available and could be part of the agreement between the designer and the commissioner.

Ultimately, I think allowing commissioned work could be a good way for MakerWorld to support its creator community, foster growth, and bring more engagement to the platform. I’d love to hear your thoughts, as it’s probably quite a complex thing to implement correctly!

Thank you for listening to my “Ted Talk.”

I’m not allowed to spend money on models though

You don’t have to, all MakerWorld models would still be free. OP suggested adding a feature for users to be able to pay designers for a specific custom model.

Yeah I was just thinking an extra feature people could enable if they wanted to offer that.

Wouldn’t be a pay wall thing for models. Although I do think MakerWorld may add that at some point.

I once was asked to design something specific and was offered money for that, so that counts as commission I guess. I setup a ko-fi account for things like that. I personally do not need any commission functionality on MW.

I just think making it all on one platform would give more people confidence as they wouldn’t need to sign up for another platform they might not of heard of. Also increased visibility that designers offer this service. But as you say there are ways to do it now. Also to hit him the point more its an opt in feature so will not effect anyone that doesn’t want to be involved.

That would be a bit too much to be honest. Commissioned work would be spammed a lot into the community. I already see a lot of people uploading v1 and v2 and v…104534 of the same model instead of fixing the issues and uploading.

It would turn MakerWorld into a thangs clone.

The best option that I see to increase contribution is that Makerworld introduces a points-system, in which designers collab with MakerWorld and offer premium models in exchange for points.

If MakerWorld includes the commissions and such, it would add a lot of unneeded features into its 3d printing business model. That is something that isn’t intended for MakerWorld, instead for websites like freelancer or 99designs.

I am a plastics manufacturer and I’d like to have a resource where I could pick a designer, based on reviewing previous work to redesign several products for my company. But I don’t want to commercialize this forum. My company is looking to pay as much as $1,000 for a new design we seek. We simply need a good designer to work with us to develop the CAD design.

I couple of images of the type of products you need to redesign will help.

i would say this is not the ideal place for that. Also setting a 1k value ahead of determining the actual work is a tough one, it can either be a perfectly fine value, but it could also be short, it really depends, i think going into a freelance job board might be the best route for you

Complex to answer that question without some definitions of the job, Cad type / Usage of object ? Method of “final” reproduction… and 1000 $ is according to a “volume” of effort for the designer (1 week / 1 month…)

Here, I’ve made a thread for you and anyone else who would like to commission designs.

This way all commission-related discussion would be in one post. People who aren’t interested can set visibility to “Muted” at the bottom of that thread.

I’m fairly new but need to find someone to design a very basic log embossment for a client of mine. The log is readily available and I can provide. I don’t know how to add their logo star to a piece I designed in a slicer. Should be very simple for someone that knows how to do it. I already created the start design from a canvas in Fusion 360 but just don’t have the skills yet to emboss it into the design. I need it separate so I may add it to numerous designs for them in the future on different products.

For something like that you want to be working with a vector file such as SVG. There are tools online to convert the logo but it’s also possible you can get the SVG directly from your client. Once you have the SVG file it should be fairly straight forward to import the logo, resize it and extrude into the part. For the best results try to keep all features at least one nozzle width thick and you can add a draft to the extrude to help print more complex features.

I expect the extrusion would be done in 360 but I am having difficulty combining the logo to an existing part.

SOLVED. Thanks for helping.

I need someone to design a storage box that is 19"x10.5"x7" that can be printed from an A1 Mini. It’s going to be used to hold objects that are 1" wide by 7" long that will be stacked on top of each other. I can provide a picture of how we’re currently storing them that is basically just a box with strings for walls.
I’m willing to pay a fair price for this, but I have no idea what that would be.

The payout for a successful redesign has now increased to $2000

I remember having used one of these back in the day before smartphones went mainstream.

This belt clip requires that one mounts a button attachment to the phone or device and it would slide into the slot and that small protrusion locks it into place. The sliding button at the top releases the lock allowing the gadget to slide up.

I wonder why you want it modeled when it can still be bought today cheap. RAM Mounts sells an equivalent here:

Unless you want it modeled to be modified and mass produced later?
