Other than PTFE length and comm cable length? I don’t have enough heigth to place AMS on top of each - are there longer comm cables available?
Mine is sitting on my desk, 30cm from the printer. That required the longer data cable and a new longer PTFE tube, but it works flawlessly. Now I sit in front of the computer and reach for the AMS, open it, throw a filament out of it and slam a new one in, without ever getting up from the chair.
My fitness tracker doesn’t like that at all though.
So where did you get the longer data cable?
Exactly what I was thinking, placing AMS above printer on a shelf.
The biggest issue with moving the AMS further away is this increases the time it takes to feed filament into the print head.
THe filament is pushed form the AMS where it is parked, all the way through the PTFE tube and into the print head. When the filament is no longer required, this is then pulled back to the AMS, the next filament repeats the journey of the first.
If you do not perform many colour changes per model, this will not impact that much, but, if you have many colour changes or many per layer, this increased time really impacts the total print time as a significant portion of the time is used solely to push and pull the filament the full length of the PTFE tubes.
This is why the A1 mini and A1 printers can sometimes beet the P and X series printers when the main task of a job is to print. The A series printers only need to pull the filament back around one inch from the print head, just enough to move out of the way for another one to get through.
The bottleneck on the AMS is the AMS, on the A series it is an inch from the print head.
The closer you can have them, the faster your multi-colour prints will be.
If this isn’t your concern, the length of the data cable is your only limitation.
If you do not care about your warranty, (I DO NOT recommend this) you could cut the bus cable in the middle between the two plugs and insert matching cables of identical thickness to each of the cut individual cables.
Ideally, try and locate a matching bus-style cable with the correct plug and correct thickness wires.
You know Malc, I never thought about the time issue, which is one of the negative parts of the whole color/AMS thing! Man, I can just see a small item being printed with 4 colors taking a week to complete, not to mention the extra wear and tear on the AMS motors themselves. Thank you for your insight…
Think I’ll just mount both AMS units above the printers using the standard cables and tubes, and call it good. Will this discussion close itself, or must I do something?
Oh, I just found the green check mark!
It’s available on the Bambu Lab shop in Spare parts > AMS > Cables.
I chose the 1500mm option.
Here’s a direct link to the cable on their EU store:

Thank you sir, but I have decided to arrange the AMS units on a shelf above the printers.
