LAN Only Mode

Correct, spaghetti detection function is connected to the cloud although we’ve been told it is done on board.

Firmware updates currently have to be done via wifi.

The AMS works for multi-colour offline printing. You can use Bambu Studio or Orca Slicer (3rd Party slicer) to generate gcode and load it via SD Card, FTP or LAN mod.

The printer can be controlled and monitored via Bambu slicer remotely using LAN mode.

I don’t think Octoprint will ever be supported by Bambu printers unless Octoprint develops compatibility on their end.

I’ve been involved in 3d printing for over a decade and the X1C is the first printer I pulled out of the box and started printing with. No hassle, no fuss. It’s quick and makes great parts. It’s a tool not a project.

If cloud Spaghetti detection, cell phone monitoring and lack of Octoprint are still a deal breaker then this printer isn’t for you. That’s totally okay.

"The X1 series has the capability to detect failures/spaghetti based on the processing power it has. This system uses a machine-learning algorithm and all the data processing is done locally.

When the printer is used in LAN mode, the printer behaves just like when it is not connected to the internet and uses local processing to provide this feature.

If the printer is not connected to the cloud, and the user improvement option is not enabled, the printer will rely only on the information it has in the latest firmware for failure detection, which might be outdated compared to the cloud-connected experience where the AI model is updated regularly."(Spaghetti detection working local or not? Why is cloud needed?)

Sgaghetti detection works well for me right now, and I rarely have spaghetti, so I don’t care if it gets better or not.

Except for firmware updates and the Handy app, everything else works without the cloud. LAN-only control of lights, bed/nozzle heat, bed/head positioning have always been accessible via Studio. AMS with Studio or OrcaSlicer works just fine in LAN-only mode.

I believe the Bambu CEO has said in interviews that firmware updates via SD card or LAN will be coming. Though if Bambu implodes and the cloud dissipates, there won’t be any further firmware updates anyway.

I don’t know if the Handy app will ever work in LAN-only mode, or if any Bambu printer is capable of serving as a server direct to a phone app. More likely a networked computer could be used to provide server capability, either as a stand alone application or perhaps as part of Studio or OrcaSlicer.

Again, the current firmware works just fine as it is, with or without the cloud.

Does anyone know why the latest firmware on the P1P only alllow 1 local connection?

I used to have it connected to be slicer and connector to my smart home (for monitoring).

I upgraded to 1.04 and now as soon as I connect the slicer and then go to connect smart home, the slicer gets disconnected.

They’ve quite strongly stated previously that this would not be happening, but if you know different, please provide a link.

I have not seen statements from Bambu saying “never”.

CNC Kitchen interviewed Dr Tao and asked about upgrades:
“Yes, it’s a challenge, and we’re actively working on a solution. Providing an SD card upgrade involves significant additional work and verification. We need to ensure unauthorized firmware isn’t inadvertently loaded into the system. We might introduce SD card-based firmware upgrades in the future, but our priority is to first ensure the process’s security. I understand your concerns.”
(Emphasis mine)

I am still waiting for enabling the handy app functionalities in LAN only mode, as this was announced already by the bambu support team replying on my support ticket. For me it is a must!
For my other printers, which i have built by myself, I am using octoprint. Mostly for monitoring while I am outside my home via vpn.
I cannot aggree that this is not possible in lan only mode.

SirWill wrote on Discord (18.12.2022) about firmware updates via sd card: “At this time there is no official plan for that. Sorry. That was misinformation back then (on the server in july 2022). I was originally told then it was possible but a month later that was changed it to wasn’t going to happen anytime soon.”

Will the new unofficial X1Plus firmware be the solution to this emasculated LAN mode?

Yes, camera and printers have a usb connection- I learned that the hard way by having it to recalled it three times for a support call.
Whatever - this usb port is designed only for internal reason ( line camera and printhead electronics) so can not be used to add for example a usb Ethernet adapter.
On top the usb connector and cabling are kind of tight - not much room to add a hub or whatever- plus I doubt that you would be able to adress that usb port.

So it is WiFi or the SD card slot to connect.

Yes, you can upgrade firmware using SD card with X1Plus. Actually, it is the only way how to upgrade firmware with X1Plus at the moment.
But generally speaking, X1Plus works perfect in LAN mode.

Anyone have the issue of uploading print files but having no problem connecting to the printer and viewing the camera in LAN only mode.

Highly frustrating

My concern is when the war with China starts, they will have your IP address and believe me, there is a lot they can do to your system with just that information. Although when a war with China starts, 3D printing will be way down my list of priorities… (oh wait, I could print a gun!!!)

I tried the LAN mode and it works fine except the fact that i have to connect to the printer every time i start the studio (anyone else?), in cloud mode my printer just appears ready for use. Hopefully this will be fixed at some point, in general thanks a lot for this “step back” against the general software trends. I’m a developer as well and we forced all our customers to work in cloud mode only, against their will. Of course this policy is suicidal, but i don’t care, the company is not mine. Our customers are mostly western companies, and they have very high level of bullshiting acceptance, so the forced cloud mode is “working” for now. As a developer i’m happy, no need to work (that’s why i bought the printer, too many free time for hobby), the customers are obligated to pay, but as a customer i’m not buying this cloud shits and avoid to fall in this pit at any price.

Good morning,
I just bought an X1e and I can’t connect it via LAN ONLY
The current state of affairs:
The printer has never been connected to the internet
Firmware: 01.01.02.00
Bambu Studio: 01.09.05.51
There is a switch between the printer and the PC.
LAN ONLY mode Enabled.
PC firewalls are disabled.
Machine IP configuration:
192.168.1.4
Default gateway
192.168.1.4
Subnet mask
255.255.255.0
Preferred DNS:
0.0.0.0
Alternate DNS
0.0.0.0
PC IP address:
192.168.1.3
In bambu Studio I can see the printer and enter the security code retrieved from the machine, it validates the code for me, but it does not want to connect to it.
Do you have a solution?
Thank you in advance

Appreciate this is an old thread - but is it still the case that LAN only mode stops the connection to the Bambu Studio software and the Handy App?
I wish to use my printer on my network only, without the cloud, but maintain access to the studio and handy apps so I can send print jobs within my LAN only - I thought that was the whole point of LAN only mode when I initially purchased the printer?!

Studio works in LAN-only mode, but Handy will not.

From the Wiki:
When LAN Mode is enabled, the following features do not work:

  • Cannot start prints remotely from outside the local network
  • Bambu Handy app is not available when using LAN Mode.
  • Print History feature is not available

Thanks, yes just set this up. Works for me as I never used the app anyways.

“Browsing file in SD card is not supported in LAN Only Mode.”

That alone pretty much screams, “we want to know everything you print” and I take great issue with that as a commercial designer/developer who KNOWS there’s NO reason for that restriction save for a VERY intentional choice that required building the cloud services and lan-incapable firmware.

Same is true about any other feature of the printer that doesn’t work in lan-only mode (such as the “AI” monitoring) without clear indication of such up-front.

At best, it’s an underhanded way to sell more units and at worse, it’s a back-door for espionage. Either way, it doesn’t increase my trust or confidence in the platform and Bambu isn’t the only company with an AMS or high-performance anymore.

If you want to access the mem card over network(lan only mode or cloud connected) just use FTP on your local network.
