Middle finger model getting deleted

I recently uploaded a couple of models of funny characters with their middle finger up.

they are obviously a joke and I’ve got comments about how ppl like them and how funny they are.

I guess people in China don’t have what we call “humor” cos I got a notification on MW to immediatly modify or take the model down.

I can’t modify it cos without the middle finger the model would lose all its meaning.

I’ve been talking to someone via a ticket I opened a couple of days ago and it’s completely impossible to make them understand it’s a a completely obvious joke and nobody could possibly take it as something offensive.

at the same time I checked and found SO MANY other models with their middle finger up (or that are just that: a hand showing the middle finger) that have been uploaded without any issue.

a few have the NSFW label, but the majority don’t.

I asked about those. The answer was that they can’t check every model that gets uploaded.

this is not the first time I’ve got to deal with the nonsense of the moderators on MW and I tell you, it’s like talking to a wall…

Do you flip off your friends as a sign of affection? Maybe not in your neighborhood, but there are large numbers of people around the world who are offended by such vulgarities.

In the past when I saw a model like that I would select the “Show me less of this” option, because I found them offensive. If they are removing them now, I will not miss them.

Try and appeal. Sometimes it makes a difference. Make sure that the model is not totally ofensive and really is part of a joke.

Middle finger or not, liking it or not, if it’s not offensive if used as a good joke. Joking was always part of 3d printing and if a middle finger should not be in the platform, then weapons, weapon accessories, trump/biden statues or politic figures and lightboxes should also not be allowed.

Those mentioned models are more offensive to me than a middle finger :slightly_smiling_face:

To you, but you are the instigator rather than the recipient.

Subjective response.

The point here is that you KNOW the jesters is rude, it is part of what makes it ‘funny’. As you know it is rude you must also know some will find it offensive.

You don’t sound stupid, nor ignorant, simply hopeful you wouldn’t have been flagged.

But, who is your audience? Is it the offended, maybe young kids? Who should these model teach a gesture. Would you have been seen as funny in a classroom using this gesture to a teacher?

You should have known to flag such things as NSFW, if not you do now.

Do I find it offensive, no, but I am fully aware others do.

In the U.K., the swear word c#*t isn’t actually that offensive, it is used in common parlance and unless you are a small child using it, or the recipient is in a position of authority you are usually safe.

Much of the rest of the world believes this swear word is a serious one and using it would bring serious consequences.

Remembering that MakerWorld is worldwide should also remind you that things have different meanings and or consequences.

Again, in the U.K., the peace simple (two fingers) can only be used with the palm facing the recipient, the other way is swearing. While not a significant one, context and consequences are a U.K. issue with many around the world having little to no clue. Famously, even Winston Churchill had no clue and he is one of our more competent leaders (very few since).

As my mother used to say “If Johnny jumped off a bridge, would you?”. What someone else does doesn’t entitle you to break the rules, even if it is simply self preservation.

They don’t proactively check any models except those related to CyberBrick, but that is not for the same reason. Checks occur if one person reports a model for breaching the rules.

In future add a NSFW on anything the wrong side of inoffensive, even if you don’t think it is to you, you are the greater and not the audience.

Push the ticket to let you or have them add a NSFW tag on it and let it be republished.

Saying “the model would lose all its meaning without the middle finger” honestly proves the exact problem people have with it. If the only thing giving the design any value, humor, or identity is middle finger, then there really isn’t much creativity behind the model in the first place.

There’s a difference between clever humor and relying entirely on shock value. If removing one crude gesture completely destroys the concept, then the joke was always extremely shallow.

Also, blaming “people in China” or acting like an entire culture “doesn’t understand humor” just because MW enforced content standards is immature. Platforms have rules because they’re used by a wide audience, including kids and families. As someone with a young daughter, I don’t really want low-effort middle finger models casually appearing while browsing creative STL designs.

The MW community is filled with talented artists creating clever, detailed, and meaningful work. Models that rely entirely on flipping people off just come across as lazy attempts to farm points and boosts rather than actual creative design.

lol ok, I’ve got nothing against people that are offended by that, but taking the model down?

get over yourself and download something else. it’s not a slur or something directly offensive or meant to be offensive, YOU might take it as offensive. but it is a joke character with a middle finger up, and I can tell you that all the comments I got are from people that understand that.

yeah I get your point and I get how you can argue against what I say about my experience with this model, but really. it’s a stupid silly joke.

it’s the model of an old grumpy granma, playing on the stereotype of the old lady that watches her neighbours behind the courtains and hate them. what the kids nowadays might call a karen, but less abusive, if you will.

for example, I too don’t get the humor in those little d*cks that ppl put on tires as caps, or the pair of b*lls some have hanging from the back of their trucks, but it’s not like I ask them to take em off or feel offended

is it silly? yeah sure. but it’s hardly offensive.

btw I didn’t “blame” people in china, cmon… again it was a joke. if you want to take it as racism be my guest tho, I really can’t change your mind on a forum.

Again, a lot of young kids — 7, 8, 9 years old — are on MW. Many of them come from normal, loving homes and have grandparents who care for them. They’ve never seen an old lady flipping someone off. All they know is old people being kind, loving, and supportive.

Why would we expose them to this and normalize old ladies showing the middle finger? Make it NSFW and the problem is solved, that’s all it takes, one checkbox. You can have it, just don’t shove it in everyone’s face because you want points/boosts. Again, it is a very low-effort model that doesn’t bring anything of value or promote any positive values. On the contrary, under the umbrella of a “silly joke,” it slowly chips away at positive values. It desensitizes people to certain behaviors by disguising them as humor. You might not even fully comprehend why or who enables this kind of thing in our society.

One joke at a time, and we ended up with things like “OnlyFans” becoming something completely normalized for young girls to make money from. It didn’t happen overnight — it took a lot of small, “completely innocent” jokes to slowly desensitize and degenerate society.

Se x and vio lence will always sell because people are who they are. We’re also tired of being told that it’s “just a silly joke” and that if we don’t laugh, we have no sense of humor. We don’t laugh because this just isn’t funny.

The defunct nationally-distributed children’s’ humor publication MAD magazine displayed that very image on its cover just a few decades ago. It was up front on newsstands at every grocery store and pharmacy in the USA and caused nary a ripple of public response. There has been a disturbing tendency lately on the internet of enforcing repressed gasping Sunday school teacher morals on everything. In any event, nearly every other online STL repository offers plenty of upright finger models and even more “suggestive” objects.
