Multi-Color Print

I don’t have the AMS device.

Is multi-color just pausing to change color then re-started where left off? There won’t be any blemishes? Each transition layer will be all lined up properly with pausing and re-starting?

Thanks.

There are plenty of photos around showing what the AMS equipped printers can do. With mine, I have not experienced and layer shift or blemishes due to the pause.

I want to do it without the AMS. I assume manually changing colors will give the same results?

You could always try and see how it ends up .

Generally, it works. But finer structures can be a problem.

Here’s an example. I printed these twice (2 each, top and bottom per print). It messed up the T on the first part in both cases (probably the first thing it printed in the new colour). The second part was fine, except for that unexplicable red dot in the lower right corner.

If you just want to change colour in the middle of a wall or something solid, it’ll usually work.

Be careful when changing types of filament, (PLA and PETG for example) as they do not adhere to each other well. I have had multiple things break, like a lot of my hextraction pieces.

The object would be an 8" oval pot with several horizontal rings up the outside of the pot. Hope I can eye when to stop and switch colors. Do I need to mess with the layer thickness settings to allow for me not to get the point to switch filaments precisely on the right layer?

Thanks.

You can put pauses in the print in Bambu studio

Yes, I know. I need to time when to pause and switch. Btw, the rings around the outside would roughly be 2mm. I need to pause right when the rings start, or right after the rings.

I meant before you send the print to the printer. In the preview tab if you right click the slider on the right you can add a pause.

Thanks. Will check it out. Is there a way to specify where to pause, like when there is a ring around the pot?

You put the slider at the layer you want the pause, then right click and click add pause

Looks great. Thanks!

I guess if supports are in the way of where to pause it won’t work?

I’m glad I could help.

Any way to know how long until the next pause?

I do not know. (Post must be at least 25 characters)

In Orca the time to the pauses is given in the list that appears after slicing. Most of my prints lately have up to 4 pauses for filament changes and knowing the timing allows me to work on other things in the studio.

So u use Orca instead of Bambu Studio?

Yes. I got used to it with my first printer and just kept using it. So far it works for me and I don’t think that will change. Bambu would probably work for what I do, but I see no reason to change.
