New A1 skipping extruder during prep phase of print

Hi there! I recently got an A1 during the sale and love it, but it’s been doing something weird at the start of every print; the extruder skips as if it’s trying to feed filament before the hotend heats up. Is this a startup gcode issue of some sort? Bambu studio and A1 FW are both the latest, full calibration done after FW update. My mini doesn’t do this, also on current FW.

Same with me, doesn’t do it during print just the start. FW 01.03.00.00.

Does your start gcode look the same as mine? I have another A1 on the way so I’ll update if that one does it as well.

Pasted yours and mine in online text comparer. Absolutely the same.

I had the same thing, which seems to me like a problem.
The lines in the G-Code which causing this extruder movements are:

M17 E0.3
M83
G1 E10 F1200
G1 E-0.5 F30
M17 D

which located in the “cog noise reduction” phase.

So I just commented the G1 command lines and now it does not do that.
That is, I changed it to:

M17 E0.3
M83

After that change everything seems to work okay.
I have no idea what is the purpose of these commands, if someone have an idea or have an official response from Bambu, I’ll be happy to hear.

I think it is actually normal mine did it out of the box.

It shouldn’t be normal though; why have the extruder purposely try to extrude filament if the nozzle isn’t hot enough to do so? Neither of my two A1 minis do that; they use the same extruder/printheads.

Like @Haruki posted, it’s likely an error in the start gcode.

My A1 did the same thing, and I commented out the 2 digits in the gCode. However, I have always wondered what these 2 steps are supposed to do and what Bambu Lab was thinking.
For anyone wondering what this step in the initialization is for, I found an official statement from Bambu Lab in another forum and that sheds some light.


"Hello

Thank you for your patience. Our R&D department gave the following response. Before bed leveling, the extruder tried to extrude but could not extrude due to insufficient temperature. This is a normal process.

This aim is to extrude a filament section against the hot end, so that the bed auto-leveling data is more accurate. The relatively large print area of the A1 requires better pre-tightening of the hot end, which will not damage the gear after internal testing.

The clicking sound we hear is the sound of the extrusion motor losing step, which is a normal phenomenon.

I hope my answer will help you with the problem you are experiencing.

Not a problem, but a feature, the printer its checking filament

My interpretation of/assumptions about (MIA) above Bambu Lab Support (BLS) response:

From the wiki (A1):
“The eddy current sensor above the hotend will detect whether the nozzle has made contact with the heatbed.”

BLS:
“This aim is to extrude a filament section against the hot end, so that the bed auto-leveling data is more accurate. The relatively large print area of the A1 requires better pre-tightening of the hot end”

MIA:
Not larger than the other Bambu printers but larger than the A1 Mini’s print area (which also uses the eddy current sensor for Z-homing/bed leveling).
Apparently more accurate bed leveling (‘contact’) data is more important for the A1 than the A1 mini (?) because of the larger print area.
The pre-tightening of the hot end is caused by putting pressure (with extruder) on cold filament. This can only be done while the filament is cold and stiff and not when it is hot and soft/molten.

BLS:
“which will not damage the gear after internal testing”

MIA:
While this is probably a clever way to achieve that the hot end stays under some pressure (so the Eddy-current sensor gets more accurate bed leveling data), in general for the extruder it is not advisable to try feeding filament through a cold hot end.
Every time I hear this ticking/grinding extruder sound, it feels unnatural and unhealthy to me. But apparently this is ‘normal’ for how the A1 works.
