P1S with AMS: How to use external filament?

I have a P1S with AMS. How to tell the printer I want to use the external filament? So far I got it to work by unplugging the AMS and then turn off/on the printer. Seems like there ought to be a way to do this more like the X1C.

Thanks for the help!

You will need to use Bambu Studio Device Tab or Bambu Handy Device Tab to set the filament details for the external spool first.

When you go to print, uncheck “use AMS”.

You can then ignore anything related to the normal AMS swatches that you would normally see colour match or you choose alternatives.

Annoyingly, it stays there making you wonder what to do next.

In short

  • tell the printer about the filament for the external spool
  • When you are about to print uncheck “use spool”
  • Go!

Just make sure you have a matching filament in the filament chooser from the prepare tab (if using Bambu Studio) that matches what you told the printer.

TPU if your using TPU and so on.

The confusing part to me is how to do the filament load part. When I clicked load on the P1S so I could push the filament in, the AMS ejected about two meters of filament then pulled back in. It did that a couple times before I just turned the printer off.

Before I use an external spool, I remove the spool from the 1st AMS tray or remove the filament from the tray feeder.
Then load the external filament using the menus on the screen. (see instructions in the Wiki).

Make sure any other filament is unloaded, if you have been using the AMS it does this automatically.

Use the Bambu Studio or Bambu Handy app Device tab and select the external spool.

Press the load button.

This will begin heating the hot end.

Make sure you have feed filament through the back of the printer manually and right up to the hot end.

The hot end will get to temperature and you should apply gentle force to the filament so it gets into the hot end. The printer should take over pulling the filament in. You may be asked to confirm filament was extruded.

Once complete, you can print.

As you are using the external spool, you will need to use the unload option to do the process in reverse once you no longer need the external spool. If you do not, the AMS will not be usable until you have.

Was wanting to print from the external spool and found this.

Is there a way to use the external spool without disconnecting the AMS?

If there can be more than one AMS loaded, this seems like a relatively straightforward thing.

Sure. The only thing you have to do is select the external filament in the slicer and uncheck “Enable AMS” when sending the file to start print.

Sorry, lost track of this thread.

I’m not seeing an obvious way of getting the filament into the printer without disconnect the AMS fiber tube from it.

Am I missing something?

Is a splitter like this one required?

If so, is one splitter better than the other?

Thank you,

chris

I would recommend using one of those Y-splitters. You can find screw-in PTFE tube connectors on Amazon, I use the BIQU ones (notsponsored)

Yes, an Y-splitter is required to avoid disconnecting the AMS PTFE. You can print one temporarily, or buy one. I’ve been used a printed onte for more than 1 year, because even before I had an AMS, I used it for a line from my dry box, and another from the printer filament mount. Recently I’ve bought the Bambulab splitter from Aliexpress and was very cheap.
