PLA Glow is NOT AMS Compatible despite what the website says

Just a PSA for anyone considering doing a multi colour print with PLA glow, the filament will chew through the AMS feeder funnel within running 500 grams of it leading to motor overload errors.

Technically it is compatible if you say, just like Bambu says, they are consumables and you will need two feeder funnels for every spool of PLA glow filament you use (with multi colour printing and all the feeding and retracting that comes from it).

Or you will need to modify it with a community developed feeder mod.

Here is what my feeder looks like after running about 600-700 of PLA glow. I hardly ever do multi colour prints so this feeder was in a very good condition before starting.

Hold on there a moment. Are you trying to proclaim that our beloved Bambu Labs might make claims that their product performs in a manner which is not true??? Shocker!!! Where are my pearls to clutch???

Thanks for the report BTW. This is the sort of info that is quite helpful when we hear about things directly from folks who have experienced it. :+1:

Well, PLA Glow is actually AMS compatible but with any of the rough surface filaments, you probably want to consider an AMS filament guide mod. I did a simple one and have been surprised at the wear on them.

Community mods aren’t a bad thing. Some are really good. It just takes a few moments to print guides and they will help prevent further damage.

Except BL has declared any mods to the AMS will void the warranty. That said, I still use the small snap-on guide with about one inch of PTFE tube. I found a longer piece of PTFE will actually release the filament with only a minor drag on the spool. Like when pulling filament near/at the spool.

Those long flower looking things are hideous. :sunglasses:

At least the guide funnels I use (print seems gone now from MW) just snap on and seem to not even leave a mark. It does zero harm to the AMS and prevents the exact kind of wear OP has.

I’m over halfway through my warranty and Bambu isn’t known for great customer service so I think I’m largely on my own anyway. Anything that can keep me from having to request warranty service is a good thing in my book. :+1:

You don’t have to convince me.

I was half way on an 18 hour multi colour print and I was getting a motor overload error every time the glow one tried to feed so I did end up printing a guide with another printer and clip it on along with about 45mm of PTFE tube and the print finished without further errors.

But it looked dumb with just one tube. So I installed it on the other 3 funnels. Now the AMS looks janky… I gotta find some other models to cleanly cap the ends of the tubes maybe. I thought my ender 3 days were over!

Haha my experience with them and their claims has been pretty good so far! And I’m generally happy with their CS. I am annoyed that I ordered 8kg of the glow filament a day or two before I found this issue.

But I need to fill up my shelf outside:

It is not just glow filament doing this…
And the issue a design flaw, not a problem with the filaments.

The feeding is no big problem as the spool runs free.
But when the filament is pulled back it is pulled by the spool with the feeder seemingly NOT feeding anything in reverse.
And I noticed quite a few times that the roll is kept on tension while feeding.
Probably to prevent the nicely wound filament going ugly.
And well, this damn piece of plastic on the feeder is SOFT, does not even have a tiny bit of PTFE tube :frowning:

Funny enough the more I have to keep up with the maintenance of my P1S the more I realise that I bought the wrong printer from the wrong company ROFL
Never had a printer this needy, failing due to manufacturing shortcomings that often…
A printer build around consumable parts everywhere ROFL

How can they claim it is AMS compatible! I just tried printing many Glow objects and am experiencing clogging. We are planning on taking apart AMS to clean, this is crazy!

@BambuLab @BambuLabWikiTeam @BambuLover777 This has to be addressed!!!

What do you mean clogging? Is it an AMS issue? What do you need to clean?

It is not recommended to print Bambu PLA Glow and other glow-in-the-dark PLA filaments with AMS Lite. These filaments, being hard and rough, may cause feeding failures due to substantial feeding resistance.
im assuming its kinda normal for abrasive filaments ,regardless of which ams you use

Ummm… you do realize that addressing Bambu in this forum is like shouting into the night… right? There rarely is a Bambu employee sighting here unless they have an announcement to sell us something new. But who knows, you just might get lucky…

Hey KYZ, I did a search and the original version of the clips I printed for mine is gone but the person who created them has a new version up.

These have worked great for me but YMMV. I just have short lengths of teflon tube in mine. Too long and the AMS lid catches on the teflon tube. But these have worked great for me and stop the funnel wear in the AMS.

Thank you! I did print different ones but this one looks much cleaner and well designed, I might just reprint them and use these as they are small prints anyway. The ones I have now - I broke like 5 of them trying to fit them on, and the ones I tried before - it fell off during printing…

I’ve had them come loose on new rolls with deep windings on the side but it’s rare. I’ve also got the PTFE tubes fairly short so they don’t catch on the AMS lid as you close it. You’ll see. But these have been huge for keeping wear off the little funnels for me.

Good luck!

Yea, it’ big problem with abrasive filaments - Bambu wrote (really short!) about
in Wiki…

Just take this minimal and easy design - it helps really and easy to print - search for “AMS Feeding Funnel Wear Protector 4.1”

Work great for me! No load/unload problems and tear/wear more…
