But I did notice a big difference between the AMS2 and the HT myself. The AMS2 feels a lot more thought out and polished while the HT seems to still suffer from “room for improvement”.
My HT had to receive some “surgery” on day one to work at all (loose connector(s) on the PCB). This was part of the set-up instructions and thereby tells me that development was a bit rushed. That, and of course its leakiness.
There are 4mm PTFE’s with even larger inner diameters. But they will of course wear out quicker and be more prone to kink’s.
My Plus 4 PTFE’s feel really fragile but in over 1300h, I have only had to replace the toolhead PTFE once due to a kink, not normal wear. Mainly PETG, PETG-CF, the odd PA6-CF, PPS-CF and a few PEKK-CF benchies.
Nice setup!
My experience with PTFE tubes from Bambu (EU store) is the opposite, especially the dark grey tubes aren’t working at all, even the one inside the H2D works worse than the white one.
I would love to get some recommendations about a certain brand/type of PTFE tubes that really work reliable with an AMS/H2x setup, including the 4-1 H2x adapter (which I thing works worse than the older white adapter, even after removing the cleaning pad)
At one point, I thought I had that issue as well. It can be really annoying to diagnose issues through the lines.
In my case, what initially looked like heat creep turned out to be something else entirely. I had to work my way from the nozzle, through the extruder, last PTFE, dissassembling the buffer,…
finally turned out to be caused by a badly cut PTFE in my AMS’ slot 4…
Funny that you mention that, because it’s also the grey ones for me that I have connected to my HT’s that aren’t working. The white ones seem to work a bit better (at least for me) although I do occasionally get resistance - though they still do load the filament, regardless of that error. It didnt occur to me to maybe try the white ones. But, I bought 8m of both, so I could always try it and see what happens. So so frustrating at the moment!
Good hint. I recognize that the 4 AMS2 I’m using are acting differently, so it might be helpful to disassembling them and to check the tubes. On the other hand, the filament runs fine coming out of the AMS til it reaches the 4-1 adapter, then it slows down recognizably, fights its way to the printer until it hits the right nozzle tube (dark grey) and then it almost comes to an stop but with some cursing and pleasing it will finally reach the nozzle.
I went thru a similar experience with the X2D and the Filament Track Switch. I’ve installed several tube bend prevention fixtures, mounted everything, including 4-1 adapter (and indeed the Track Switch), so that there was no slag in the tubes left and got a sort of predictably working setup.
I may look at that as one of my AMS’s (slot 3 if I remember correctly) does have issues retracting. I thought perhaps the rollers, but they seem to look fine.
I get that issue occasionally as well - with the new 4-in-1 adapter and I have also removed the pad. I do have 2 white ones.. so that is something else I can try when the new tubes arrive. In fact, if I remember correctly, prior to my re-arranging my setup, I am pretty sure I had a white 4-in-1 adapter connected to my tool chain and it worked a dream!
In my case, the PTFE underneath the roll was not cut straight at the internal hub coupler. Easy check in my case, but I have not gotten round to fixing it as I am doing OK avoiding that slot for multi-color
At least the hub interface is easy to see with the AMS2. It just took me so long to look because my filament did reach the extruder every time. It just locked up in low-flow conditions from that AMS friction (and cumulative friction points, but the AMS was what was too much)
Since many users place the AMS above the printer I wonder whether there is an AMS mod to let the filament exit the AMS in a more downward fasion instead rising up just to be bend down afterwards. I’ve looked at Makerworld to no avail.
Thanks! Length? I have no idea. I didn’t measure any of the tubes. I tried to make sure they had a smooth arc entering the 4-in-1 adapter. Also I have had zero issues with the v2 4-in-1 adapters and mine still have the filament wipers in them. Same with the dark gray tubes - no problems. I’m mentioning that they work for me, and have for 1,000 hours per printer, because I see so many people saying these parts don’t work. I’m not saying all of those people having issues are wrong. I guess I’m just lucky.
There is one key thing here though, and others have mentioned it, use only a PTFE cutter on your tubes. Not only do they create even cuts, they also don’t collapse the tubing.
Be careful buying PTFE tubes from amazon, lots of low quality junk out there. If you can order from bambu direct that is ideal. If you must order from amazon make sure its a reputable seller and the tubes have a dark milky white appearance, if they look clear likley they are low quality high friction tubes.
Hi Maxim,
Appreciate the heads up!
I’ve ordered new tubes from Bambu, so I am just waiting for them to arrive. Chances are, it wont be till the end of the week. I will re-do my tubing and will report back once it’s done. Hopefully, with good news!
Interesting that you kept your arch. I did have that at one stage as well, however I have read numerous articles on people straightening their tubes to minimise the resistance in curves. Perhaps this is contributing to my issues, as I did straighten my tubes. Again however, the AMS Pro 2 tubes do work (with occasional resistance errors) but still.. maybe I should look at changing that and leaving somewhat of a curve…
When I first added my second AMS I had ordered some clear PTFE from Amazon. I ended up printing a 2 level rack for the 2 AMS units. The bottom tray pulls out for access to the lower AMs and required longer PTFE tubes. My very first print from the bottom AMS with the longer PTFE tube had retraction problems. Tried different filaments and it consistently had issues. I did have some of the Bambu branded PTFE in the house and replaced the tube and bingo, problem solved. Its been over a year and Ive never. You can see here that drawer open. I probably added about 18” to the length of that tube
Nice setup!
My Bambu tubes will be arriving Monday, next week. They seem to take a bit of time to arrive from the AU store. I will rearrange my tubes and hopefully will that will resolve my issue. Bit of pain when you cant use your AMS’s how you want to! Anyhow.. will report my findings once its done.
Hi Shoal,
I can understand that and I appreciate that the tubes cannot be an infinite length.
My only statement that I can make about Bambu’s specifications is that my 2x AMS Pro 2 do work. Occasional resistance errors, but the filament always loads. Those tube lengths are approximately 1.5m (give or take a little but pretty much near the 1.5m mark). My 2x HT’s are the problem. Now, they sit appropriately 100mm higher than the AMS Pro 2, so those cables (for the HT) are in fact shorter than the AMS 2 Pro. Its the shorter cables that aren’t working.. and its driving me somewhat bonkers as to why!
Now to add more to the mystery.. ready? hahah.. I in fact do have a FTS. My 2x AMS Pro run directly into the FTS, which I have mounted at the base of my H2C. From there, they run upwards, into a 4-in-1 adapter which then leads up into the nozzle/toolhead. So, if we want to get technical, I would say for my AMS 2 Pro connections.. the ENTIRE cable length (or filament run) is near 2.0m (give or take a little) and works fine. My HT’s don’t connect to the FTS. I’ve bypassed that and they go directly into the 4-in-1 adapter and into the nozzle/toolhead. So their cable length is far less than what connects my AMS 2 Pro, and as mentioned, they dont work
PS I am away for work, though I will post a pic of my setup when I get home, this coming Friday evening. That will give you all an idea of my setup
Thank You and I hope the new PTFE tubes work for you.
I wish I could take credit for that AMS rack but I found it here on MakerWorld. As you can see I have the origional AMS and added the SunLu dryers. They actually AWESOME but with the textured covers you couldn’t see the filaments so I did modify it a bit to add the color chip holders into the rack and had to raise the top shelf by about 15mm to fit the Sunlu heater so I guess its a remix and Ill take credit for that! LOL
