Quality of Print, Malfunction or..? - A1

2 Days ago I got the A1 with AMS for my birthday, I printed an A-10 Warthog and the quality wasn’t what I was expecting, I am assuming there was a malfunction in the print but I found holes in the A-10 and the supports were really sensitive, I used one colour which was Matte Grey, PLA Basic.

I also forgot to mention during the build, parts of the support fell off (Back Rudder) which resulted in strings everywhere.

I attached some photos below, have any of you had this problem?




Where did you get the model? In general for models with slightly tapered surfaces (like wings and control surfaces of this plane) look pretty bad when printed flat since each sliced layer is super visible. Try angling the whole plane up 45 degrees. Also worth printing a scaled down version too to see what I mean.

I got the Model off of Thingiverse.

That is a pretty tricky print to get good results with.

If I were to print it, I would use a dedicated support material (PETG for PLA or even BVOH) with 0mm z-distance and a solid support interface.
The other thing I’d do differently is to use Adaptive Layer height, maybe even going below the 0.08 default minimum (can be set Printer profile settings). It’d take ages but adaptive layer height allows personal trade offs between z-resolution and time. Using Orca, combine infill with a maximum layer height of 60% nozzle diameter can also speed things up a bit.

P.S: I don’t have Orca, do you have any other software you would recommend?

For a beginner, an A-10 is challenging. While adaptive layer heights are very easy to use (button at the top, set quality vs time slider, apply, note the layer height bar on the right and left/right click in the bar to adjust locally), the use of support filament takes a bit of learning by doing.
Since Orca and Studio are very similar, it is much easier to get into when having used Studio. But you’ll need to use developer mode to print from any slicer but Studio. So maybe just use Studio’s adaptive layer height without combine infill.
The problem with the latter in Studio is that it reverts to a 100% nozzle diameter infill height which is way to high. Infill gets messy causing defects.
