Tried to print a large helmet part which failed. Probably due to the supports I chose.
I tried to restart the print from the last layer by dropping the part lower into the build plate. The job restarts but hasn’t printed the brim I added. It will likely fail again due to this and its another 8 hour print.
Any suggested help will be greatly appreciated.
If you have any images of the issue & the settings used post them up, its difficult to diagnose the issue without seeing whats happening.
I’ve had problems with brims being missed out of prints which seemed to be related to colour slots particularly when using flush-into objects.
Might be worth just flipping the colour slots around if that is possible to make sure that the colour it wants to print the brim in is the same colour as the first one it wants to start printing the model in.
Hi guys, apologies I’m very new to this and I should have added more information.
Thanks for replying

So 8hrs into printing the top piece of an Iron Man helmet my tree supports came loose from the bed. I knew that the dome top of the helmet would never print so I paused it. I had no option but to remove the 50% complete part. In the slicer I dropped the helmet below the build plate to the height I wanted to continue from. I changed the support settings and added a brim as the front of the helmet would be unsupported until joining the rest further in the build. It wasn’t until it had re
started that I noticed the front didn’t get the brim. By that time it was 2am so I just left it to run and turned down the speed. Thankfully it has continued to print but not finished yet.
Why would the slicer not add a brim to a part with such a small footprint on the build plate.
I never noticed it on the preview so its a learning curve for me to watch out for.
Does the slicer only recognise the actual bottom of a part but when its dropped below the plate not identify structures needing support brims?
(I probably over done it with supports now and might run out of filament, oh joy)
I see you have got Brim Type ‘Auto’ selected. Not sure what algorithm it uses - but if you want to be sure of getting a brim then set it to Outer or Inner or Outer and Inner.
Thanks Ukdavewood,
I assumed it would see the part being started small and growing up from there. I will be sure to watch for this the preview from now on.
The print finally finished with just enough filament to spare.
My guess at the layer height to restart was close but not perfect (slightly bigger by a couple of mm). Is there a way to drop a print through the print bed to the exact layer it failed? I couldn’t see a way other than measuring from where it failed. Then calculating the remaining height to start from.
Many thanks for getting back to me. I appreciate all the help I can get.
