Stolen designs on etsy

I just had to vent a moment. We talk about stolen designs on makerworld, but it goes the other way to. Found out someone on etsy had taken one of my designs from here and was trying to sell it. I contacted the seller about it, and this is the response I got.

People are so beautiful

Wow, that guy is a clown. People like him make me want to never share a design again.

Etsy is bad, but have you ever tried searching for your stuff on AliExpress? It’s really bad. There are four of my designs being sold in this one listing alone

that Etsy seller reminds me of a certain person on this forum, whom I won’t mention (they’ll out themselves in this topic, I’m sure.)

Lazy sellers in general, lots of them out there; I’ve caught two people selling prints of my work at different trade shows, without even giving me attribution. I asked where the models came from, they said they made them. When confronted, they made the same claims as that Etsy Seller, but the fatal flaw was they believed the license wasn’t officially recognised; BambuLab might not care, but the marketplace certainly did. A license is a licence, the law is the law, and the license said “noncommercial” so it should not be sold, it’s that simple.
I showed both the sellers and venue staff the license and gave my business card to prove I was the account owner, and thus the original content creator. They were given the choice by the staff to remove the items or leave the venue.

They can’t be bothered to learn 3D modelling, and if they do try to learn it, they give up because it requires actual work. It’s often the same bunch as the ai-bros: “Hey I can exploit this thing for monetary gain! I don’t care about ethics, the law, or crediting others’ work! Free money!” They see an exploitative money-making opportunity and then capitalise on it; at the end of the day, they don’t have a creative bone in their body, and eventually they’ll make a critical mistake. Karma always catches up in the end (reporting them helps too, I suppose).

It looks like these — only want to print things that are easy to print and sell. Make your models assemble with screws or glue and they won’t touch it

@Josh-3D I have a shop on Etsy and everything I’ve designed has been copied and sold. Even took my descriptions and images in some cases.
You can try reporting them to Etsy. Here is a link: https://help.etsy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000344448-How-to-Report-Intellectual-Property-Infringement

You might want to include the messages they sent you as well…

I’d buy from his shop and do a charge back on my card on him. Then I might order and cancel at least once per day, just to be a pain in his a5s. If Etsy won’t take it down, then they are at least going to put in some work for stealing my sh%$.

It’s annoying, but it ain’t gonna stop me! I love designing, haha, and sharing those designs.

It does make me appreciate my day job though. I’m a 3d artist, and more or less get to focus on the art. There’s departments for legal and all that, so I’m just removed from those concerns.

I wish I could forgo the points system and have Bambu contract with my work directly to have us do designs for Makerworld. As it is, since I do it on my off time, it becomes a loss in a way. I keep thinking about how I need to monetize my work in some fashion to help offset that cost of time. Stuff like that guy kind of stresses that whole thing out. Like why bother desinging for 3d printing when I can just go loose myself in work and make more and not worry about ding bats like that etsy seller. )

I’ve seen a number of people like this in the 3d printing scene. Just that level of disrespect that is heaved at designers. Is it jealousy? Or what? I don’t know. They do seem to know basic cad, but more or less use that to weaponize their arguments. There’s a lot to good engineering and design though that I don’t think people always pay much respect to.

I work in the video game industry, have been for nearly 18 years now. When I started, my fellow artist would tell me not to because everyone and their grandma would do it for free just to get their name in the credits. There was a lot of truth to that, but what people failed to realize is that those same people aren’t good artist. People think it’s just… uhh, fun and games, making games, but it’s a very technically and artistically demanding job.

Hardened industry artist are a different breed of artist.

Yup yup yup. I reported it all. Not sure if anything will come of that, but beyond that I’m not gonna get worked up. I’ve got a new design I’m dropping today and they ain’t gonna ruin my mood!

Are you the seller on Ali or you’re getting ripped off there?

Getting ripped off. In that listing, the Motorcycle, Orc Warrior, Krusty the Clown and MegaMan designs are all from my Printables account.

I feel like it’s nearly impossible to get stuff taken down there. You can find lots of Transformers there, nearly identical to the real thing. And if a massive company like Hasbro can’t get that stuff removed, what chance do we?

That’s wild. I wouldn’t have expected to see 3d printed stuff on aliexpress like that. I guess why not though! I’ve seen a lot of interesting things on that site, haha.

I respect you, I am a software engineer by day and once I clock out I wouldn’t be able to force myself to code anything for fun. I can’t imagine designing all day and then in your free time you still do it. The only reason I design anything (and those things suck) is because I find it relaxing after a long day of deadlines and words… so many words.

I only put out designs that I don’t care if they’re stolen or not. My good stuff is hidden and I sell them.

Sorry you had that happen to you Josh. Stuff like that also had me remove all my designs from the web. Of course Etsy is no help at all regarding this, you’d have to get a lawyer involved. People just can’t be nice when money is involved.

I have an etsy store and strait up had a dude asking for my design for free, so he could print a couple hundred for his business. I don’t sell my files let alone give them away for free, have you seen the price of Fusion360?

This is so sad, I feel sorry for you Josh… This dude is a clown…
Maybe you can start selling on Etsy yourself? Since obviously there is a market for your design, why not let the original designer get all the financial benefits?

I feel bad for you…
Please do post his name here and his etsy store =)
I’m sure this community will show some ''support"

Indeed, it’s free :stuck_out_tongue: JK, very pricey if you do pay for it.
