I don’t really care about jumping spools, the issue I would like to prevent is a stuck front roller. I created a mod where a wheel mounted in the center of the spool kept the spool from jumping, but this increased the issue of the front roller jamming. To me it appears that the spool and front roller need to be able to disconnect (Jump, slide, slip) in order for the roller not to get stuck.
So with this idea I have two designs;
First are two rollers positioned just forward of the front roller. When the spool starts to climb the front roller, it will come in contact with the two added rollers. This will act as a clutch, when the weight moves to the added rollers the driven roller loses traction, slips.
Second, works the same way. A rod is mounted thru all the spools. The rod is supported by two bearing one between slots 1 & 2 and a second bearing between slots 3 & 4. The bearing are adjustable so that the distance the spool can move forward before starting to slip is adjustable.
Both mods are in testing by me. If anyone would like to try either of these possible solutions, I can post the mods.
I’ve been experiencing the same jumping spools. I worked on it for a bit and found that if I hold the spool on a thin screwdriver just slightly above the rollers, it feeds fine. So I figured I’d do a deep dive on this forum here. First time on. Found this post and I’m relieved to see I’m not the only one experiencing this. Where would I find your models for the workarounds? I’d like to test them with you. Thanks.
I have the two AMS 2 Pro approaches designed, printed and installed. But not published yet…
First design is an 8mm bar that goes thru all four spools at the level of the lid. For this design you want to use four identical spools. The bar is adjustable to come in direct contact with each spool.
Second design mounts to the AMS 2 pro prefeeder and is adjustable for spool outside diameters of approxiately 199 to 200mm, and comes in two widths for spools of 58.0 and 60.4mm inside width of the spools. As this design also has roller spool guides.
Neither design has had a spool lock up at this time, I have been testing, but I can publish for others to test???
I see many approaches that work for different people, but I still have not found a 100% roller freeze fix… Weights certainly help.
I had one design where a roller inside the spool prevented the spool from coming up. No springs, just a rigid mounted roller preventing the spool from loosing contact with the two AMS rollers. This appoach proved very bad, as the driven roller would lock up very often. Seem like there needs to be a way to allow slipage between the driven roller and the spool…
I found that the steel bar seems to work the best for me. I held a metal rod with one spool and it didn’t jump. That might be the method I’d test. Also want to point out that I removed the pre-feed mod that a member had posted to protect the porcelain piece (the Funnel Saver). I’ve had no jumps since removing those. So I have no idea if that piece was my issue or not. I’m going to run it as-is for a month or so and see if that didn’t solve it. I’d also like to put the Funnel Savers back on and utilize your rod mod to see if that also works. Maybe the Funnel Savers in conjunction with the rod mod will do the trick. I’d like to continue using the Funnel Savers.
