Tangled $10/kg filament is available -- how good is it?

Slant3D has released their own in-house filament at

Here’s the intro video:

Pros: cheap!
Cons: both the 1kg and 3kg spool does not fit in AMS

Has anyone already gotten their hands on a spool? How is it?

I have ordered one 3kg spool, but will need to respool it on to Bambu spools, so it will take some time before I can report back on it. As soon as I have it respell, I will do some test prints and share my results and print profile if applicable.

Looking forward to see how well this filament prints. What’s the point if it is cheap but quality is low or has a very narrow profile window (meaning that you have to configure the filament profile exactly right in order to print, and if you are slightly off, it messes up).

Based on their vids it’s pure PLA with no additives (except for color) so it should be good and consistent, but with a bit higher melting temperature.

Agreed, that’s what I’m hoping for. Their specs read:

Tangled PLA should be printed at:
200-235C if printing at 35-50mm/s (Old Prusa or Creality)
235-255C if printing at ~100mm/s (BambuLab High Speed)

I’m not inclined to purchase Tangled filament. I prefer to do my own tangling.

I am glad to see more companies working to lower filament cost, as it encourages others to do the same.

If “cheap!” is your primary goal, AliExpress has 1 Kg PLA for less than $10, (some for $7-9), more color choices, no need to re-spool. no subscription. Free shipping from my country (US), has taken 3-4 days. No quality issues so far.

What an awful name

Pretty sure its meant to be ironic.

Do you find PLA+ worse than PLA?

… but what a wonderful girl

As much as I appreciate people attempting to lower filament prices, I feel that “Tangled” isn’t established enough yet to the point where I’d be interested in purchasing filament from them. The limited color supply, long shipping times, weird spools that are incompatible with AMS, etc, make it seem less than appealing.

Their website is also a mess right now and feels unprofessional, which is another factor that makes them seem less than appealing in my eyes.

We’ll likely have to wait until “late January” (as per their website) to see how this filament performs, as it seems they aren’t even shipping yet.

If you’d watch the video you’d know that “cheap!” is not their main goal, but rather being competitive on local market, because it makes no sense to have filament shipped from overseas to still be cheaper than locally produced one.

As far as filaments go I only buy locally made OR bambu labs ones.

If more people had that attitude, no startup would ever get to start.

indeed… and in such case it won’t be called a startup, but rather an endup

If you’d read the post I replied to, you’d know that “cheap!” was given as the only “Pro” characteristic. Also, that reply shows that I did watch the video, so I was able to point out that that single “Pro” could be bettered without the the need pay for a subscription, re-spool, and print everything in black.

It is not our responsibility to encourage startups. It is entirely up to them to provide a superior product that meets our needs at an acceptable price.

As said by Ikraus,

Tangled does not meet my needs or expectations at this time. As said in my original reply, this is largely due to the limited color supply, long shipping times, spools that are incompatible with AMS, and the fact that their website is a mess right now. It’s not just about being a startup. What I meant by “established” is not that they don’t have a sustained customer base per say, it’s that the way they are currently operating seems unpolished, strange, and prone to changes. I don’t consider that “established” by any means.

Totally agree, this post is meant to evaluate them and go from there. Not advocating either way.

Since I don’t have the filament in hand yet, that’s the only pro I factually know. Further pros to be added as they arise.

Do the python AMS mod. It will fit the spools

I ordered their black pla spool 3pack last week. I’ll report back how it goes when I have a chance to put some of it thru my x1c.

Yes their selection and availability and frankly shipping is not great yet, but people need to understand their business model. They are a commercial 3d printing company selling printing services that produces their own filament on site, them selling their filament as a commodity is a side project trying to expand into new markets competitively and use their plant capacity effectively. No kidding they’re not as cheap or as varied as no-name China import filament, that’s not really the point of the project, the point is to have domestic manufacturing that is competitive (and ethical), not just undercut.

If this sells well they will improve in the future. That’s how business growth works.

$7 a month for a subscription. That is a hard pass; you haven’t established the value, at least not in my eyes. Without the subscription, the pricing aligns with other budget providers and is unlikely to move many buyers.

So, quick update! I received the 3kg spool of black PLA. I tried a print job with Generic PLA settings in Bambu Studio, and had a spaghetti mess each time I tried (3x so far).

Right now I am running various calibrations (PA, Flow Rate, Temp) to see if I can get it dialed in to run well.

I would not recommend printing it on the super tack cool plate, as does not have enough adhesion with this filament. I had several parts either dislodge right away or after a while with extreme base layer lifting.

Many people say the Supertack kinda sucks so… ;-;
