Things Josh is Designing/Printing (Formally Mega Swatches)

Not sure it’s ready for release this weekend! I have some further refinements to do. I did manage to test with the motor finally, and I’m not sure if it’s gonna be strong enough. Might need to source a different motor setup. Since I had the model printed up how I want though, figured I’d snap some pictures for fun.

Been a bit down and sick, so it’s been slow going. Haha, thankfully the 3d printers can still chug away, although it took me a day to get myself together enough to make a crank arm.

This actually works pretty well with just the crank arm. I’m surprised. I’m not entirely sure if I even need a motor now. Here’s a shot showing the back. I did a video too, and posted it to Instagram. Maybe youtube would be a better place for videos, but I’m too lazy to fiddle with another web service on top of everything else. :stuck_out_tongue:

I wish there was a way to privately list objects on Makerworld. It would be cool to have something like this up and prepped where I could share it for early access, beta testing, type stuff.

Showing off my latest design. A card shuffler. | Instagram

Absolutely gorgeous, I love the antique feel to it. I love the colours too. What filaments did you use?

Genius humour.

Phenomenal design.

I’ve said it before and I will say it again, your ability to layer a design is an amazing. The right mix of colours, materials and details turn a good thing into a great thing.

You have two products there.

Kids and the average Joe.

Connoisseurs of a bygone era.

I feel like you’re calling me old

I showed it to my friend that used to work in the printing industry, and showed him the press that inspired it. He told me he oh yeah he use to print on that thing! I felt a little younger.

I do like the idea of doing a second one in the skip-bo colors. Although I was thinking a clear petg version could be really cool. Slow it down to get that solid clear look, or well as best as one can get. Ahh, I’ve done several prints like that of other things, and I love it each time.

Bambu’s metallics, the iron gray and copper brown. The red is their PETG-CF. I think I need to try their silks next. I wish they had something more like a polished brass. I got some of the crimson red sparkle. Really curious how that’s going to look in person. There’s a notable lack of red in their shiny materials.

How many hours did you spend designing the card shuffler? It is such a cool design.

Oh, I’m not sure. A couple of days worth I’d imagine. I tend to plan a lot of things out ahead of time in my head though, so my modeling typically comes together smoothly. This one has had some extra challenges with the mechanical bits. I’ve got kind of lucky with the basic operation though, as for the most part it’s been working.

This project has me wanting to do more with gears, and more mechanical pieces. I have a few ideas floating around in my head.

This is the best ad for their metallic filament I’ve seen! Also, yes, shiny red is super difficult to find. I’ve been looking for a perfect one and the closest I’ve ever found was Amolen had a black/red dual filament that was so close to being what I want. I may try the Bambu sparkle red next.

This is the best selection of words to boost my confidence

I’ve been testing this thing over and over again, and every once in awhile I stop and think dang, this looks pretty cool! Although, when my earlier iteration kept jamming, I mostly thought “This stupid piece of junk! arrgh! will it ever work!” (narrator: it would)

I’m so excited with this thing! Haha, and happy to get it posted. I upgraded the way I’m doing my instructions, and I’m just really proud of how it all turned out.

I have this vision with 3d printing, to bring quality, fun, interesting, consumer focused, prints to the table. I don’t want something that just shows off what a 3d printer can do, but is something you want and forget is even 3d printed as it carries with you through the years!

I’ve done some cool stuff, but I think this is one of my best.

I love it. Upgraded instructions is something I would really like to learn how to do.

I would strongly recommend you make a quick video of your shuffler in action and then embed the YouTube video on the description page.

I plan to! Had to run off for a weekend project though, so had to wrap up what I could for a release

I saw this article and thought I would share it in case it is useful for your design.

Nice! I think I went with a good choice. That makes me wonder though if I should have gone with a more standard gear. Might have got the motor operation going a little smoother. I adjusted mine to be as tight on the tolerances as I could without binding.

This fuzzy skin feature is so realistic. I’m blown away. The print had some serious stringing issues though and got knocked off the plate.

Time to reinvent the wheel, ya’ll.

Let me back up a minute though.

I actually, I have a big fun project I’m starting to model. Once I get it a little further along, I’m gonna post some shots here. For the moment though, I’ll say this. I ordered 5 rolls of latte brown and 5 rolls of dark brown. This is all for one thing  ahhh yeah. We’re gonna go big

On another front though, I’m making yet another way to organize screws (hence the comment about reinventing the wheel) and just wanted to share because why not! While I’m gathering what I need for that big project, I fell down this side quest of an adventure.

Basically, I have these modified gridfinity bins that are about 1.5 as large as the originals. I’ve been organizing all my screws and hardware in those, but my collection has gotten too big and I needed a better way to store/organize/transfer things. I don’t have a dedicated space at all. I liked the idea behind the gridfinity bins though because they were easy to grab and pull out where I needed them. Now that I’ve got 80ish of these things though, managing and storing them is a huge pain.

This is what I came up with. They are slightly larger, so I can store more/bigger things. They have a spot for a label, and my intention is to print all of them out of transparent PETG. I’m gonna make a corresponding gridfinity tray to go with them, to store them in. They’ve got lids too, so I can transport them around with me without worrying about spilling the contents.

It’s been a slow few weeks with the weather and crushing deadlines looming over me. You can’t keep a Josh away from a 3d modeling for 3d print though.

I freakin’ love 3d printing. The way we can tailor and customize things for our needs, so specifically.

I may have to try this. Been toying with metal filled filament and this looks like a good canidate.

It’s been an awesome use of it!

I really like the metallic filaments. The iron gray is currently one of my favorites. I’ve been pairing it with the matte black.

Josh over here doing Josh things. Can’t wait to see what new and interesting things comes out of that brain of yours. One day I too will make cool things

On a more serious note … what label maker do you use? I like those small detailed labels you’re using.
