Awesome. This is exactly what I expected, but it turns out someone was already working on it.
I’m reevaluating everything now. I only recently … Last six months … started using the web app etc, before that I would transfer to SD card. I have over 1,000 models I created and have published 1 to date, and I was about to publish a whole lot more … I would have printed thousands of files over the last 3 or so years.
But
Now I’m thinking of buying prusha or something else that doesn’t have these restrictions or morbid interest it what seems like the need to control other people’s destiny. Who woulda thought.
Changing the terms of the sale after the sale is scummy. If BTT or another company comes out with a drop-in control board that can run normal klipper, I’m buying it instantly. I will not spend another dollar with Bambu unless they walk this insanity back. I will actively recommend against BL printers unless they reverse this horrible decision. Which is a shame, because the hardware is good. It was already bad enough that they forced cloud connectivity for features that SHOULD be available in LAN mode. But this is a step too far.
This is more than just a request to walk the update back. It’s now a trust issue. What’s to say they won’t do this again or, worse, just brick printers that do not conform? My pair of X1C’s have been very reliable devices for 2yrs and I have recommended Bambu printers to at least 10 others who purchased them. “Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.”
I’m going back to Voron…
Anyone that works in security knows that the best security is one that involves removing internet access entirely.
Banks, government, defence, etc. don’t secure their ■■■■ by putting it on the cloud, they do it by airgapping and firewalling everything to lock it down.
Thus, Bambu’s change to enforcing the cloud “for security” is complete and utter lies. There is no mistaking this is a rug-pull.
I’m a very disappointed Bambu Customer.
Flashing to Klipper is not the answer
Bambu building back trust and committing to not doing a wide rollout of the beta firmware is, though
Omg it’s a joke, literally from a meme site in 2 minutes. Have a laugh sometimes .
Honestly I just bought my P1S a little over a week ago and I could return it for any reason to Microcenter, but I’m most likely going to keep it because I’m tired of spending all my time messing with my Ender 3 just to get it to print reliably. I’d buy a Prusa core-xy if I could afford one, but I can’t it which is why I got the P1S. Thankfully I got my printer before this change went into effect so what I’m going to do is keep it in LAN Only Mode, firewall it so it can’t phone home, and continue using Orca Slicer. Instead of buying BBL filament I’ll just buy another brand and transfer to compatible spools if necessary. When it comes time to upgrade to another printer I’ll just save up for another brand like Prusa.
At the end of the day, BambuLabs will either listen to their user base, or do what they want regardless. There no reason they can’t change their plans to be include security features AND keep their customers happy without handcuffing them to their own software.
This is not the first time a company has made a horrible business decision only to back down once their user base voiced concerns or began boycotting. I have hope that the company will do the right thing - but we’ll have to wait and see what they do.
I just deleted all my 3D models from Makerworld, I will also be filing a chargeback with my bank. This is the definition of bait and switch. They sold me a device, and a couple of weeks later they brick it remotely, holding it hostage until I upgrade.
Selling my X1C? No. Why would I saddle some other poor schmuck with this problem?
Unless BambuLab reverses course, I’ll be buying a replacement printer from a competitor, destroying my X1C in spectacular fashion, and posting the video of the carnage on YouTube.
To be honest, this will not prevent me from getting a Bambu P series in the near future… probably will get 2 now since they will probably be going cheap. As long as you can still use the microSD to print, Bambu can’t stop me from using the printer. So if I don’t want to have it (inter)network active at all, so what? Do I think this is a good move by Bambu Labs? No. Do I think they have shot themselves in the foot? Possibly - whether it is due to this being blown out of proportion, kneejerk/shortsighted reaction on Bambu’s part to cloud security issues, or part of a agenda I don’t know.
IMO they should have worked with third party developers first to come up with a security model that works for everyone if there is an issue here… i.e. public/private key exchange is all fine… so why not a mechanism whereby the user can create/supply their own, and it’s use to secure all communications… rather than be dependent on Bambu’s cloud infrastructure…
But then again, this seems to all still be fairly green with probably a fair amount of guessing/assumptions/misinformation going around and not enough concrete information known about exactly how and what is happening. I will simply be advocating against making (even though I don’t use it) the machine LAN mode unusable without Bambu servers present at some point - IMO Bambu Lab servers should play no part in LAN Mode functionality at any point - and am waiting to see what it is they are actually going to implement (or don’t implement based on consumer response)
I don’t blame BBL for being vile greedy totalitarians. At least it makes a certain amount of perverse sense.
I blame abject glazing-slaves like you.
They lost me. If they don’t walk it back I will not buy another Bambu printer, I will not recommend one to others, and I will stop buying Bambu filament.
Bambu Labs CEO → FLASH to Marketing! “What is the quickest way there is for me to destroy this company?” Marketing: “Oh we have this idea for a security upgrade to lock in all our existing and future user and make it impossible for them to ever leave. It worked really well for HP Printers!”
I just locked out my printer from accessing the Internet on my router using MAC filtering. I’ll run my P1S until it dies and find another brand to replace it.
I am in the process of upgrading and was considering getting 6 more P1S machines but that of course is now out of the question.
Sorry Bambu. You took a great idea and ruined it.
Oh well. It was good while it lasted.
